Once Rubic was in the sky once again, he took a few moments to correlate the information on the worn radar with his internal GPS and navigational systems, to ensure the most economic path. Thus far, it appeared the next area to travel to next was the northern pole, the next location on the radar’s scan. Additionally, it appeared the local authorities were still in pursuit, meaning the massive android would have to find a way to lose them—the arctic region would likely be ideal in losing them. ‘Giving them the slip?’ Was that the human phrase? Rubic dismissed the thought and moved on, the ambient temperature in the air drastically changing from the heat of Mount Frypan to the chill of the arctic circle, making heat management less of an issue for Rubic’s systems—replaced with having to make sure his systems did not ice over. He could not afford any malfunctions at this juncture, especially now that the enemy was clearly aware of his presence. The droid landed upon the largest glacier with a modest thump, the sound of snow re-settling upon the glacier in the air for a brief moment before everything turned to silence—save for the howling wind around him. So far, Rubic did not detect any heat signatures, aside from the normal animal life in this region. For a long moment, Rubic switched between various detection systems, looking for any sign of his would-be opponent, but so far, there was no sign of it—and so far, considering how often Rubic had intercepted them in the act of securing a Dragon Ball, this made it more of a strange situation than the others. His first thought was a trap—but he could not wait around forever for it to be sprung. He had to secure the orb. The robot approached what appeared to be a natural cave in the glacier, a formation from wind and water erosion, similar to a rock-cave, but this one likely expanded by the indigenous creatures for shelter against the weather. The radar was pointed in this direction, prompting Rubic to once again switch to his sonar systems, but the material the cave was made out of—frozen salt water—made the sonar waves echo about as if in a mirror maze, making the feature nigh-on useless. Instead, he switched to his thermal imaging, looking for anything putting out some sort of heat signature. Deeper and deeper the robot pushed into the cave, eventually finding the Dragon Ball… in the middle of the floor. The ambient heat on it suggested it was recently touched and moved, but there was no sign of who or what might have done so—the bait in the trap. Once again, Rubic searched the area for any sign of pursuit, but was eluded once again. Whoever set the trap up for him was clever and patient—he could see no other signs of where the enemy could be hiding or when the trap would be sprung. Already, Rubic powered up his combat systems and defenses to full, expecting an attack at any moment as he made his way back out of the cave. And just as he reached the exit, Rubic was forced to dive into the snow, a wave of hot water lashing out towards the entrance—and freezing the mouth of the cave solid-shut in an instant. Rubic once again searched the area for any sign of the opponent, but there was none. It was highly possible the opposition emitted no thermal signature, which would make locating them in the natural environment difficult. Preparing for combat, Rubic’s arm switched to the Mega Buster, the warmth of the cannon filling the air around him, melting the dancing snow in the air to vapor. His vision switched to electromagnetic, but there were no signals to speak of, prompting a switch to seismic. However, with all the shifting snow and the water around the giant glacier, there was no way to tell what was an enemy signature and what was just ambient shifts. Air density—that was it. Once again, Rubic switched to Sonar, normally useless in such wide, open spaces, but it did allow him to notice changes in air density, which would at least allow him to detect when an attack was coming and counter it-- Just then, another wave of fast-freezing liquid approached, forcing Rubic to leap to the side, only for one of his legs to be frozen solid in a thick blanket of ice, hugging his calf and foot. Without hesitation, he determined the origin point of the attack and fired, the blast flash-melting the snow and ice into vapor, which soon froze again into sleet. There was no resulting explosion or destruction, making Rubic determine that he had missed the shot. With his leg currently incapacitated, he would have a hard time maneuvering or flying. His free hand shifted slightly, producing a flame nozzle, not enough to melt the ice without damaging the armor or components underneath. However, this was only partially a ruse; Rubic needed to lure his enemy into making another attack so he could attempt to retaliate, even if he couldn’t see the enemy. There, the air current stopped in a particular zone, just before another wave of water lashed out, resulting in Rubic once again managing to move out of the way—but this time, he fired his Buster in mid-dodge, impacting against a hard surface instead of the snow and ice. At that point, his electromagnetic and thermal scopes picked up faint, erratic signals from a particular object, and sure enough, using every type of camouflage one might expect, the enemy stood there, knee-deep in ice and snow. Its design was quite ingenious—if under-equipped. For all of its ability to blend in with a cold environment, it seemed incapable of capitalizing on that advantage with a truly killing blow. ANALYSIS COMPLETE. SYSTEM DESIGNATION: ICEMAN Now that Rubic could see the opponent, he could finally fight back. He closed the distance immediately, managing to shatter the ice off of his leg in order to do so. Iceman leaped back, shaping the water he produced into projectiles before throwing them, using the cold and gravity to make the devices razor-sharp. A few were turned away by Rubic’s armor, but one managed to sink into his shoulder plate, forcing the metal behemoth to stay mobile and evasive, firing off his own attacks with his Mega Buster. The blasts once again flash melted the area around them, causing portions of the ice to become brittle and crack open, a dangerous notion on the world’s largest glacier. The snow whipped and the wind howled around them as they moved to and fro, keeping their distance from one another for long moments as they tried to find purchase in the other, neither one gaining or losing ground—a stale mate. Fortunately, by the looks of things, Rubic was faster—much more so. He would likely need to close the distance in order to take this one down, risking getting frozen or pierced in the process, though after a few moments, it was highly probably that the opposition was stalling until his allies arrived. The more of them there were, the lower Rubic’s chances of success were, which could not be acceptable. Rubic touched his Mega Buster for a moment, depressing a button and causing a blade of energy to sprout out from it, instead of shooting beams of energy. With his energy blade activated, he closed the distance in an instant, lashing out at Iceman to end the conflict. The opposition ducked left, seeing him separated from one of his arms, spilling metal fragments and wiring all over their snowy battlefield. Rubic did not let up, opting to give his opponent no opening to retaliate, pushing the offensive relentlessly. Each swipe of his energy blade took another piece of Iceman, whittling the enemy droid bit by bit—too fast to eliminate in one attack, but too slow to avoid damage altogether. However, one final feint from Rubic’s end allowed him to score a clean stab into Iceman’s head unit, ripping it off with barely any effort. The android was still moving and mobile, despite having no way to see or visualize the battle, but it was a simple matter of landing behind the headless unit and removing its memory and hard-drive with another well-placed strike, ending the fight in that moment. As with the others, Rubic would need to eliminate this unit from the equation to prevent it from behind salvaged—but a direct blast with the Mega Buster would be far, far too risky given the environment. Instead, Rubic took his energy blade and carved Iceman into several pieces, throwing each chunk over into the ocean on different sides of the glacier. While slightly time-consuming, it would ensure that even more time would be spent—and likely wasted—trying to salvage whatever was left of the enemy unit. Rubic retrieved the radar and Dragon Balls from his storage compartment, once again making sure of his count and the others needed. Each of the spheres had a different number of strange stars upon them, as if to denote which was which. So far, Rubic had nineteen stars in between the five he had, which meant he was missing the three-star and six-star. He looked down at the radar once again in order to plot out his next move, but the cold seemed just too much for the small device, causing it to lose power too quickly—he would have to recharge it in a warmer environment in order to use it properly again. With that, Rubic headed towards a warmer climate—somewhere he could recharge the device and be on his way once again. The coastline was chilly, as one would expect during this time of year, but the temperature was at least high enough to facilitate rebooting the radar device. A small port emerged from Rubic’s left arm, along with a cord, plugging into the radar so it could feed off of his internal power system for some time—at least enough so it could function on its own in order to continue the mission. This gave Rubic, at least, some time to enact any repairs he needed, since he went through several combat scenarios sequentially and quickly. A pair of small, spider-like robots emerged from the droid’s back, crawling here and there on the giant droid. With their small, microscopic tools, they set out repairing hairline fractures, minor damage, and the like across Rubic’s body—he had suffered nothing they could not handle, but obviously, bigger tasks were beyond their capabilities. They would ensure circuitry and cracks would be restored or repaired, while anything beyond their talents would be handled by the Codex. For now, however, the small drones would do their part in keeping him battle ready—at least until a more hazardous threat emerged. WC: 1805 |
