Heavy equipment rattled as the reconstruction efforts to rebuild West City from its latest disaster continued unabated; at least for the time being. The sound of the engines and myriad of sounds that accompanied expansive construction was alien to the young Demon but it was also a source of fascination. There was so much movement and life in this realm that she couldn’t help but stand there wide eyed in an attempt to take it all in. There were partially repaired structures that towered high above her. The skeletal beam work that formed the foundation for the buildings were exposed in areas that were still in dire need of work. It gave the city an appearance of a wounded beast covered in small parasites that rapidly worked to repair the beast’s exoskeleton in order to protect it from further harm. She made a small cooing noise when a pane of glass was put in place. Idly she walked closer when she caught a glimpse of her reflection within its reflective surface. “Hey! Girl! You can’t stand there!” Despite the fact someone just shouted she didn’t seem the least bit bothered. In fact she tilted her head to the side and stared in amazement as her reflection mirrored her movements. Her understanding of this realm and in truth her very existence was still ever so limited. While her understanding of the local dialect was limited she quickly learned speaking in her native tongue inspired some strange reactions from this realm’s native population. Many of stared in horror where others screamed and ran away. On a few occasions she’d been attacked but she learned to quickly withdraw when faced with violence. The presence of a hand that gripped her shoulder caused her a small degree of alarm. The base instinct that ran through her mind was to quickly run away and hide but the grip on her shoulder was insistent. So she was spun around and two curious emerald eyes stared at rough looking Human with a strange yellow helmet on his head. When the man noticed just how young Lyra looked his gaze shifted to his hand that still gripped her shoulder and quickly released her. “You can’t be here. You’re likely to get hurt with all this construction going on.” Her head tilted to the side as she stared at him curiously. “Hurt,” she echoed in a questioning tone. Her pronunciation was rough but she spoke clearly enough that he understood. “Yes. Hurt. Look where are your parents?” His question was answered by a sporadic blink and a questioning stare. “Parents,” she said as she mimicked his tone. “Ugh. Why do I always have to find the troublemakers,” the man questioned no one in particular as he covered his face with one hand and shook his head from side to side in exasperation. “Look if you’re lost I can take you to the nearest constable but the fact is you can’t stay here. It’s too dangerous.” Her eyes widened ever so slightly as she recognized the word he spoke. “Danger,” she said in a guarded tone and quickly looked around for its source. Her body tensed while she lowered her posture in preparation to flee. A look of panic filled her emerald eyes and she idly bit at her lower lip. “Uh.” The man simply blinked in surprise at her reaction and took a step back. “I think I’ll just go bring the constable here,” he said while he turned to leave. However, Lyra quickly darted forward and grabbed his arm. She quickly shook her head and pulled back to insist that he not leave. “Danger,” she said with urgency. The man started to look a little uneasy with how this encounter played out and quickly looked around for help.

Fire and debris rained down from above when a sudden explosion rocked one of the nearby cranes. Without warning Lyra dove back through the newly raised glass with the man struggling against her grasp. The sound of the glass as it shattered was muffled as a secondary explosion hit the crane’s extended arm and caused the steel beams it held aloft to tumble down towards the ground. Shrill screams rose up above the sound of rubble hitting the ground. Steel support beams hit the ground which crushed numerous workers beneath their bulk. Meanwhile Lyra pulled the worker farther into the darkened recesses of the office building to hide herself from whatever had attacked the work crew. When she felt she was reasonably hidden she stopped fleeing and instead hunkered down behind a ruined table that was still overturned. The sound of the man’s frantic breathing kept drawing her attention away from her surroundings so she gave him a cursory glance. His back was pressed up against the nearby wall and the look in his eyes nothing short of sheer terror. She felt his fear was reasonable considering the situation but what she failed to grasp was that his fear was more directed at her than the attack that had occurred. She would have asked him to be silent but she didn’t know the proper words to use. It was then that the man curled up into a ball and broke down into an unrelenting stream of tears. The man’s arm was twisted at an odd angle and for a brief moment she glanced down at her own hand. Had she done that to him? She didn’t recall having such strength before. Alas there wasn’t any time to probe that situation further when the sound of laughter echoed throughout the small room. The sound of the broken glass being crushed beneath a boot drew her attention. The man continued to cry so she turned to him and whispered harshly for him to be silent. The look in his eyes reflected her own concerns at the situation but he went dead silent after that. What she didn’t realize was that she just uttered the words in the tongue of the Netherworld which caused the man to nearly faint. When she turned her focus forward she creeped up to the edge of the overturned table and risked taking a glance. When she saw two forms slip into the room from the passageway she used to enter Lyra quickly ducked back down behind cover. Sparks of electrical signals jolted through her body that urged her to dig a hole and bury herself so that she wouldn’t be seen. However, as her short claws raked against the floor she realized it was fashioned of some sort of stone-like substance. While she could break through it she knew it would cause a commotion that would reveal her presence. Mid thought she was interrupted as the table was flung aside and she crouched there staring at the smiling face of what appeared to be another human.

“Oh? What do we have here?” The voice of the man that towered over her was low and gruff. He spoke more to himself than the one he’d arrived with. The sounds of terror and carnage that were more than audible from outside hinted at just how frightened the town’s inhabitants must be. However, the man who stood before her did not appear to possess even the slightest amount of fear. In truth he looked more amused upon finding her than anything else. She wasn’t fully versed in the way of this realm’s inhabitants but she knew in his position she’d be hard pressed to feel anything other than fear. She actually possessed a measure of it in that situation because she was more accustomed to being on the outside of such travesties waiting for the foray to end. Not only did she have a front seat for this attack but she was being forced to participate. That is if she intended to survive it all. Instinctively she crouched down on low with her hands and feet supporting her weight. With unexpected speed the young demoness crawled back towards the wall. Her distinctly feline-like movements caused the man’s smile to waver and for one to truly reconsider what he intended to do here. “So we have a feisty one eh?” The one who spoke now was a woman. She entered with the other one while Lyra attempted to hide. The woman started to walk towards her partner but veered off to the side so she’d approach the demoness at an angle. Lyra backed away until the wall pressed against her back. She wanted to run away but she also knew it was unwise to expose her back to potential predators. The man still didn’t move. His expression betrayed the doubt that started to take root within him. “Hey, I don’t know if this is such a good idea.” The man reached out to touch his partner’s arm but quickly withdrew it when she gave him a cross look. “Don’t go getting soft on me now. We’re here to take what we need and I won’t have you ruining it.” The man turned to stare at her completely taken aback. “Hey now. No need to go that far. I just think,” he started to say before she quickly interrupted him. “That’s the problem with you. Don’t think. You’ll hurt your pretty little brain with that kind of talk. Just listen and do what you’re being paid to do.” With that said she turned and look at Lyra. “You on the other hand. At least we won’t get bored while we’re waiting.” The woman picked up a nearby table and set it down. A metallic ring emanated from the blade she pulled out from her boot. The blade was roughly four inches long and from the way the light gleamed off the blade there was no mistaking how sharp it really was.

The woman started to walk towards Lyra. Each step brought that blade closer to the young demoness. Those emerald eyes remained focused upon it as she pressed back against the wall. The thump of the woman’s boots against the floor cried out in Lyra’s ears as her senses went wild. Normally the young Demoness was nothing more than a scavenger that picked at the bones of whatever was left behind. Things that had long since died or only recently joined the dead if she was lucky. However, recently she’d encountered another of her kind. If he could be described in such a manner. He showed her that she didn’t have to sit idly by and wait for her prospective meal to perish. The stranger showed Lyra that she could take matters into her own hand. With the woman closing in the intense hunger that was ever present started to surge and expand to new heights. It was extremely difficult to find a decent meal in this realm. The intensity of it blurred her vision and caused a momentary lapse in her concentration. After that her instincts took over and it felt as if her body moved on a whim. She could feel flesh rend beneath her claws and blood splatter her face. She couldn’t be certain what happened but shortly after she managed to calm down she felt at peace. She felt as if she’d been well fed and it did not take long before the local mayor found her and congratulated her on saving their small town. She had no idea what was being said of course but she recognized the words power and strength. The Mayor spoke of an old master that could help temper her strength. Within a few days she was sent on her way south following an appointed guide that would see to her safe arrival at Roshi’s island.
