Combat Rune, Telepathic Link

Yan had been gone when Daji returned to Grace and Querenci. It wasn’t surprising or unexpected, and yet something felt almost to be missing. It was different somehow to when the monkey popped off to do who knows what. His normal haunts in town were filled by other people and the woods felt untouched, as if the monkey hadn’t been there in a while. Juturna’s parking space, as it were, had been growing new grass, until eventually she appeared there again.

There was no sign of Yan’s energy signature, but the ship had come in sometime in the night. She sat in the woods with her ramp down waiting for her kitsune friend. Yan had actually tried to get her to park somewhere else but she refused. She wanted to be found immediately by the fox even though Yan did not want to be found immediately by anyone. It would be better to go someplace deeper in the Holy Lands where only the fox would tread, but there was little arguing with an ASI.

The fox was the only one who came even this far out however, so it should be fine. It would be better to be found. Yan had no interest in returning to town, let alone the hotel. He was sure if he showed his face Jantellovene might stomp him into the ground, or worse, ignore him altogether. Being unwanted was perhaps the monkey’s biggest fear and yet he brought it onto himself again and again. He did not like stepping into a place he did not belong, and he no longer belonged in Querenci. If he appeared again, well, it would likely be to burn it to the ground. There was little middle ground.

If Daji made it up the ramp he would be greeted by happy pings and the ship’s entrance screen showing a clear:

GOOD MORNING!(╹◡╹)♡

Unlike Yan, Juturna had no worries about belonging anywhere. If there wasn’t space for her, she would create it.

I WENT TO PEFU!!!...
MISTER CASS LET ME ENTER ITS ATMOSPHERE!...

While most considered Pefu to be the icey moon, Juturna was speaking of Grand Pefu, the gas giant the moon circled. Entering its atmosphere was certainly a feat.

MISTER CASS GOT STUCK IN SOME ICE...

(Combat Rune, Telepathic Link)

There was one presence Daji missed despite being back on Grace--well, actually, there were a lot of people he missed, even if it was just a little. Mister Juch appeared to be away on business, back to his home world of Kelioux (as far as the Fox knew), and while he had made a new friend in the form of Shin, there was still the aching feeling of his other new friends--Haki, Bulma, and a few others. But most of all, he found himself missing the presence of his mentor and warden, Yan. The monkey hadn't been on Grace when Daji returned from his trip, and while he was making it a point to spend as much time as he could on the farm, training by himself or with Shin, or spending his free time with Hayami, the young Kitsune could not help but notice the distinct lack of Yan's presence.

The normal places Daji knew to find Yan were either unoccupied or filled by someone else, though a few people he had asked said that Yan had not been seen for quite some time now. Daji stretched out with his senses across the planet, but as far as the boy was aware, his warden was not on this world. He tried to push his senses out further than that, but unlike Hayami, Daji just was not skilled enough to sense a life form, no matter how strong, beyond a planetary scale. His ears drooped a little as his efforts to find Yan had resulted in nothing--

But there was one thing. It had been the slightest, probably the weirdest of chances, catching his scent on the wind. He knew Yan was skilled enough to stay hidden if he did not want to be found, yet he still had not found a way to truly mask his scent from the Kitsune's keen nose. When the boy picked up on it, he followed it relentlessly like a bloodhound, turning a corner within the forest--one Daji had grown so used to, so familiar with--before his eyes looked upon the metal space whale that was Jutters. It was hard to assume anything else; the familiar dents, the size and shape, everything about it betrayed that this was not some ship, it was the flying whale known as Jutters. Daji knew that Jutters was a ship like any other, of course, but for some reason, the analogy just seemed to stick to the boy's head.

He found himself swiftly approaching the ramp and scaling it in only two steps before he abruptly halted, hearing the happy pings of Jutters and looking around for the nearest screen, which showed a happy face and a salutation. Daji had been in this area a few days before, so Jutters must have just returned. He could only catch the faintest trace of Yan's smell here and there, and yet the boy could not sense his warden's signature.

Still, Daji smiled back at the computer screen, happy to see another friend return to him. "Hello, Jutters! Isn't Pefu really cold, though?--" he tried to ask, having not been there himself, but from the imagery and sensations Hayami had shared with him, it was easy to envision in his imagination. However, before he could continue with his questioning, more words flashed across the screen, revealing what had happened to his warden. He felt his ears perk up as his smile swiftly faded for a more serious look.

"W--well wait, if Yan is in trouble, you should take me there, right?" he asked, suddenly alarmed that Yan got stuck in some ice. Somehow, Daji should have known that Yan would get himself into trouble eventually...

"I got out," came the familiar brogue as Yan stepped around the bend, knocking his knuckles gently on one of the screens where Juturna purposely showed her points in the conversation so he'd know what she was saying about him as well.

There was nothing different to Yan then, no change in his presence nor distinguishing mark left upon him. He wore the same clothes, had the same hair, no beard or anything of the sort. His dark eyes were tired, but they were often tired. The things he had been through in the last few months did not change him, even though he wanted them to.

As he stepped into Daji's range of vision he kept his energy muted to the point it still couldn't be felt. This wasn't all that unusual either, and while his expression lingered on the faux annoyance he played with his ship, it shifted quite easily into a mischievous smile as he looked back to the fox.

"Eventually."

That was a story for another day, if it was told at all. He understood the ship's amusement over it of course, but he quickly dismissed it as his eyes closed into a wider smile.

"Welcome back~" It was a bit backwards considering it was Daji moving to greet him, but even late, Yan did not want to fail to acknowledge the journey the boy had set himself on. The monkey had watched the little dot of the tracker ping into new places, even the beyond, and knew that if Daji had returned to Grace then he felt he had accomplished something in his goal to become strong. That was much more interesting than Yan's misadventure on Pefu.

"Tell us about your travels!" he continued, waving him over to the newest couch that decorated Juturna's ever changing living room. He included Jutters, who pinged encouragingly, the screen closer to the couch beginning to glow as the one nearest to the door darkened.

Daji heard someone's footsteps a moment before he heard the voice, his ears shifting towards the source of the sound a split second before his eyes and head did. At first, Daji had a look of alarm on his face, but when he saw it was Yan, he heaved a sigh of relief and seemed to relax more afterwards. He knew Yan was good at hiding his presence--probably better than Daji was, even though the Kitsune was training to become a full Ninja--but there was something about Yan that seemed... off. His clothes were the same, if a little more worn, his physical appearance was the same, if a little tired. Was it just the combination of small things that made him seem different? Or was there something else?

Daji almost asked aloud what the issue was--and while Daji knew Yan to have a deeply private personal life, something the Kitsune thought better than to try and pry into, he wasn't sure why Jutters was parked all the way out here and why Yan still felt it necessary to hide his presence. Wouldn't the people of Querenci welcome him? These were questions for later, as Yan decided to welcome Daji back home--wasn't it the other way around though?--before offering a seat on a new(er) couch, asking about the Kitsune's travels. Immediately, Daji's ears perked up and he nodded, moving to the couch with a sway of his tail before sitting opposite to Yan--if he decided to take a seat.

"There's... there's a lot to cover, and I still haven't met everyone I wanted to, but Hayami gave me a few ideas on where to start, a few places to go to. I... I haven't gotten the teleportation technique down like she does, so I had to use the next best thing," He said, tapping at the teleportation rune on his belt, though it still seemed to be at only a half-charge. "I went to Yaidrat, Kelioux, Valhalla... the Elders on Yaidrat were really nice, and Grandmaster Adel is... well, he's really experienced and wise, but he always seemed like he was hiding something," he said, biting off the urge to say 'just like you', but he continued on.

"Luther... I don't think I've ever had my physical body punished like that before, not since the temple... but then Hayami had mentioned someone called King Kai, so I decided to visit him too. He was really nice, if kind of goofy," the Fox continued, unable to keep an amused grin from his face just thinking about it. There were a lot of words to describe King Kai with--he was pretty eccentric.

Yan might have grinned a little wider at Daji’s response to his sudden presence. It seemed the ninja still had some training to do~ The monkey couldn’t fault him too much of course. It was very rare to see Yan physically training besides throwing his life around in high risk battles, but what he did do was a lot of was energy control and mediation, and he had a lot more years of experience in hiding then Daji had even alive.

He could tell too that the fox sensed something amiss, but he did not ask, and so Yan would not say. He wasn’t as private as most people thought him. He had few secrets he actually cared about, but he did not speak about himself when he could hear about someone else. He did not test how interested someone could be in him.

So he sat, leaning back as he did to properly hear the tale, only to lean forward again as the boy gestured to the rune he’d used for travel. Sketchy thing that was, but considering the ways Yan traveled without Jutters, he had no room to talk. The boy continued explaining a few of his stops. Thte monkey smiled in agreement about the Elders of Yaidrat and grinned widely at Daji’s perception of Adel, likely also in agreement. His face settled as Daji explained Luther, only to brighten again as he mentioned King Kai.

”I haven’t met Luther actually,” he notes, almost curious as to how he hadn’t. ”But Yaidrat has treated me well. Adel is…” he trailed off in similar fashion to Daji but while Daji’s had been for thought, Yan’s seemed to give him more time to become devious. ”We’re quite close, actually~”

MISTER CASS HAS A THING FOR OLD MEN…

As the words came on Juturna’s screen the monkey couldn’t help but snort, covering his mouth and nose quickly after, though he was still holding back a laugh. He did not quickly deny it however. He had little room to these days

”King Kai isn’t bad, for a celestial,” he notes instead, not without prejudice but he was still smiling a bit good naturedly.

”How do you feel?” he asks in the end, his head tilting slightly in interest. The point of this journey was to build strength, to build understanding, to build confidence. Daji certainly seemed himself, but had anything changed? Had the journey proved worthwhile?

When Yan mentioned never having met Luther, the Kitsune rubbed the side of his head, as if reliving some trauma that had occurred against his face. Knowing Saiyans, it was probably highly likely he was smashed with a fist to the side of his cheek--likely repeatedly. Regardless, the fox seemed to relax a little when the subject changed to Adel, a surprised look on his face appearing when his mentor and warden stated that he was quite close to Grandmaster Adel, but then Jutters spoke up with one of her screens, stating Yan had a 'thing' for Old Men.

Daji's head tilted to the side as one of his ears flopped to to the opposite side, as if he wasn't sure what to make of that statmenet. Yan stiffled a laugh as if the statement, probably a joke of some kind that Daji was not sure what it meant or implied. However, before the boy could speak up, Yan was quick to change the subject to King Kai, and already, Daji's head filled with the odd memories of spending time on the Kai's planet, what with having to chase his monkey around and hit his bug-thing with a mallet. The gravity had not been rough--compared to Grace, nothing involving gravity was all that bad.

"Me?" He asked, curious why he was being asked the question and why he wasn't asking the same thing of Yan. Still, his mentor had asked first and the kitsune took a moment to look at something far away--likely in the direction Hayami was sitting--before he looked back towards his warden. "There's still a lot of other places I haven't visited... and after my time on Vegeta--the planet, not the people--I'm sure there's still so much I have to learn. But... but King Kai taught me a lot, and I feel... I feel much stronger than I ever did before. Not, like, in the raw strength, but..." he said, having a hard time truly describing it for a moment before he smiled up to Yan.

"Everything about my battles, everything about how I fight, how I learn from others, how I train myself... its all different. I've only been gone for a few months, but... but I feel like a totally different person in some ways. I may be as strong as I ever was, but my mind is... better, my technique is stronger, I feel disciplined, I feel...."

He paused for a moment, trying to think of the right word before he smiled again, his ears wagging a little happily. "I feel ready for whatever lies ahead. King Kai said there's no end to training, that there's always more to learn. But its the difference between being lost in the woods and knowing where you're going. I feel like the latter now," he finished.

At Daji’s questioning response, Yan gave one of his own, his face twisting into a clear “Who else?” expression. Yan hadn’t let the boy get a single question in about himself, but it was not something the monkey realized he was doing. It didn’t occur to him for a second that Daji would want to know what his recent days entailed, and that was somewhat of a compliment to the fox. In his twisted up mind, people that wanted to know about him and his activities usually had less than altruistic reasons for them. Juch wanted to know so he could keep tabs, gauge what control he had, read between the lines for some deeper knowledge. Damaskia wanted to know in a question to his new found loyalty, as everyone was looking to nip at each other for Pendragon’s favor. Anna never wanted to know anything at all, and Barkley too knew not to press. Why would Daji be any different?

A sly smile came to Yan’s face as Daji reaffirmed he was speaking of Vegeta-sei and not the king or crowned prince. It was a funny thing to think about even if Daji missed the potential innuendo. Yan’s head tilted a little though at the actual sentiment. What had happened on Vegeta-sei that didn’t happen on Valhalla? He wanted to ask, but the boy continued, explaining what he originally asked for.

The answer made him smile.

”Well, I’d like to add a destination to your forest trek, if that’s alright,” he explains at the end, a bit noncommittal to the act. ”You can go whenever you feel up to it. There’s no rush, or need if you really don’t want to, but I think it’ll prove helpful.”

It was kind of awkward for him. Daji may have thought of him as a mentor, but if he said as much to Yan, the monkey would have snorted as loudly as he had to Juturna’s lame joke. That was never something he set out to be, and advising him now was a bit less hands off than he normally liked. He meant it when he said Daji did not have to go, but he also meant his opinion that it would be helpful to him long term. The main reason he was suggesting it however was completely off course to both those things. It was to give him an answer to something else entirely that the boy had not even thought to ask.

”Earth.”

When the question of another destination came up, Daji opened his mouth to immediately ask if it was the place Bulma had described to him--Namek. Of course, the way Yan went about suggesting it was odd--something about it had some sort of finality to it, like there would be something else that the Kitsune would have to deal with, causing the young fox to close his mouth and force his ears to stand up straight as the monkey continued on.

But when the single word came out of Yan's mouth, the boy felt--and likely looked--incredibly stunned, as if he had never thought to consider a place like that, where all this training, all this travelling and improvement, began. From a single misunderstanding and prejudice caused him and Hayami to fall under the care of Yan. A single spark of aggression caused so much suffering, and yet now, after so much time, the man that had spirited him and his lover away from Earth was now suggesting he go back to it. The fox played with the thought in his head as his gaze felt down towards the ground in thought, his tail whisking about as if anxious.

"I--" he started to say, shaking his head for a moment before looking back towards Yan. "I don't think I have any right to go back to Earth. And... and even if I did, I don't know if I could go back to that place where we met. Even if its rebuilt, even if everyone forgot who I was, I would still know, and..." he started to say, almost overwhelmed with guilt at what had happened, what he had done.

"But... I... I guess that's the point, huh? I have... I have to face what I've done and atone for it, don't I? Even if it hurts, I have to face what happened and deal with any consequences--running away from it is what I feel like I should do, but then... that flows against what I've already learned. Even if no one else there knows what I did, I should... I should go and make amends, right?" he asked before managed a braver face than the one of pure concern he had a moment ago.

"I won't let you down. Once my vacation is over, I'll go there before going to Namek."

The location he spoke of had the expected impact, and Yan waited for Daji to regain his bearings. When he started, Yan’s dark eyes stayed on him kindly and patiently. The kitsune explained his worries, his insight, and the monkey watched as the guilt seemed to overwhelm his face. He waited for it, and the but came, but still Yan’s gaze remained open. He was not confirming or denying anything Daji was saying. He was giving no sign that Daji was right or wrong, and that was usually the point.

”Making amends is…” he trailed off there, passing a glance to Juturna’s screen but the ASI did not offer him any input. ”Often it is more for ourselves versus the people we have hurt, but I don’t think that is completely wrong either.”

He paused, then looked back to the boy a small smile creeping up. ”That you can go back at all is something amazing. Being able to face one’s past is something one needs to be able to do if they want to be free.”

He lifted his hand palm up in front of them, gesturing that Daji give Yan his left hand. If he obliged, the monkey’s hand would move up to the cuff. Like Bulma had done before, an easy movement caused the panel to slide up but it only required his finger and a soft trace of ki for it to open and uncuff. It hadn’t been all that tight, but the weight of it placed back in Yan’s hands was very likely astounding.

”Your journey forward should try and maintain some freedom, for both you and Hayami, so you can find some traces of happiness.”

Yan’s gaze remained lowered as he held the cuff in both hands. He turned it over in one, then pulled back. He didn’t look up yet, seeming fascinated in the piece of technology that had helped him keep track of the kitsune for so long. When he did look, his smile was light, as if he had merely patted the boy on the back.

"More... for ourselves..." he repeated quietly, the Kitsune's ears flattening against his head for a moment as he fell into thought again, but his ears perked up again when Yan continued to speak, taking in what his mentor and warden had to say. Juturna's silence on the matter was disturbing, but he guessed it was because Jutters just wanted to let Yan have his say before she said something at his expense again. And Daji had to admit, being able to go back, being strong enough to bear whatever happens, was rather amazing. He never would have gone back to that planet had he not felt himself ready for whatever lay ahead in life. Even this...

"Free..." He was reminded about what Shin had said, about having the strength to be free, and he suddenly felt that... yes, he did have the strength to be free. But then, as Yan subtly pointed out, he'd never truly be that unless he faced his own past and learned to move on from it. It seemed to be a little contradictory--how he had been told to think about others and their points of view before himself, but maybe this was different. In order to help other people, he had to make sure he could help himself, too, right? It was just slightly confusing...

When his mentor gestured, Daji instinctively did so, not even noticing the bracelet on his arm until Yan began to fiddle with it, causing the Kitsune to have a look of surprise as the device was finally pulled away. It was... strange, how heavy it was, something he never noticed, until it had been removed. Already, something in him felt... lifted, like his arms had been like speghetti until now, like his body didn't really feel 'right' until now, and that he had just been desensitized to the whole thing...

He could help but stare at Yan for long moments, even after the pat on the back--and of course, Daji leaped onto his mentor and gave him the biggest hug he could muster! He was like a leech for a moment until he finally pulled away.

"Can... can I keep it? If... if you're going to be away for awhile... I would like to have it," he asked, not really sure why he was asking something like this all of a sudden, but... it would be clear to Yan that it was important for the young ninja to have something that reminded him of his warden.

Yan stiffened upon the hug as he usually did in Daji’s dramatic shows of affection, but he relaxed easier than normal, and lifted his hand to gently pat the boy’s head. He waited and eventually Daji pulled away. Yan’s expression was soft and neutral but that never suited him. The more natural state of his face was always on the verge of a smile, his eyes ready to crinkle. When it softened into a blank slate like this it seemed somewhat sad rather than thoughtful or absent minded.

He blinked though as Daji asked if he could keep the bracelet. His face immediately returned to mischief and energy as he pulled the cuff away from the kitsune and behind his back as if Daji had asked him something preposterous.

”No way! This thing is expensive!” was his answer, and Juturna was quick to quip in now.

HE IS NOT EXAGGERATING…
IT WAS MADE BY GOD…

Yan’s brow furrowed as he read the screen and he scowled. ”Don’t call Edge God,” he chastised, repeating a name Daji had heard before in it’s more proper form. Bulma had said it too when she looked at the cuff and identified it as Damaskian as well as the creation of one Sei Edgen.

THEY ARE MY MAKER…

Juturna responded simply making Yan shake his head in distaste. ”Use parent or something then!”

EW…

”You don’t want them related to you but it’s okay that they’re you god?”

GODS ARE NOT MEANT TO BE LIKED…

Yan was laughing now. It was probably a lot of new information to Daji, but the ridiculousness of it would not be lost on him. Whoever Sei Edgen was they weren’t well liked, with even their own creation addressing them with distaste. It said more about the scientist than the kitsune would likely catch on to.
