Juch: Combat Rune

Juch -
The door slid shut, as Juch walked out onto the streets. With briefcase in one hand, he used some of his remaining free fingers to adjust his lapels before walking down the pavement. It was getting dark, and those who wander the streets numbered fewer in number, until he walked past a particularly gloomy section near the outskirts of the capital. Hmm? Juch stopped, and looked to his side at one of the crumbling buildings adjacent to his. Broken doors and boarded up windows faced him--one of those abandoned projects, it seemed. But within...a dull whistle from seemingly out of thin air began to sound off.

He raised a brow, only to have his cigar suddenly be snuffed out in the midst of the still air, "..."

During the next day's lunch hours, the android reached for his phone. It was a strange occurrence from last night that he couldn't shake his mind off of. He dialed Ticho's number and waited to see if the Saiyan was available.

Ticho - Yesterday at 10:32 PM
A calm wind blew as Ticho sat under one of the trees on the academy grounds. The scholar rather enjoyed eating outside this time of year right before the cold really began to move in. Just as he reached into his bag for the meal he had packed, he began to hear his phone buzz.

Pulling the phone from his pocket, it appeared Juch was calling. "Must be important," the saiyan thought as he answered on the third 'ring.' "Afternoon professor."

Juch - Today at 1:56 PM
"Good afternoon, Ticho," Juch's voice buzzed through the speaker, "I was just curious on whether you know anything about the building located on 2711 Trevnar Square? I'm only asking given your line of work with various projects."

Ticho - Today at 2:07 PM
"2711 Trevnar square?" The scholar repeated, mostly to help jar his own memory. The address sounded familiar, but it was taking him a moment to recall exactly why. "Trevnar Square, Trevnar Square, ah yes. I've been trying to purchase that spot for some time. Wanted to renovate it into an office building as its the perfect location for one of my clients. The owner refuses to give it up though. Keeps saying the place is cursed or haunted or something. The guy couldn't get his story straight but refused to sell on the grounds that it would put someone else in danger. Why do you ask?"

Juch - Today at 2:17 PM
Hmm, was that so? Juch tilted his head as Ticho explained what he knew. Indeed, he can see it being in a useful position geographically. However, the situation with the owner was very interesting. On one hand, he wasn't using it for anything, given the decaying state of the building, but he isn't selling it away either. If it wasn't for his experiences last night, Juch would have dismissed the thought altogether, but...

"Last night, I was passing by there," Juch responded as he leaned back in his chair, "Where I heard an inexplicable noise coming from within. I can't exactly describe it, but any lights in the near vicinity were snuffed out. I was curious, but given the 'no trespassing' sign, I declined to investigate much further. That's when I decided to call you today, Ticho."

"In which case, the owner claimed that there's something wrong with it then? Perhaps I should look into it. It may just be a coincidence, but I didn't have a good feeling about that place."

Ticho - Today at 2:29 PM
The saiyan pondered for a second. He too had dismissed the owner's statements and was even considering reaching out once more. Still, this new information certainly made such claims more believable. If nothing else, getting to the bottom of the matter might make ease the owners concerns and result in the betterment of the area.

"You're more than welcome, of course. In fact I'd be more than happy to assist in any way possible. Any ideas on where to start?"

Juch - Today at 2:48 PM
"Thank you for offering, Ticho," Juch replied, "I think we can split the work up as follows: I will look into the history of the property itself, to see if there were any previous owners and any other incidents. I think if you can contact the current owner and see if you can convince him to let us investigate--even if it was for a short period of time--and also try to get his story down in writing. It may be difficult, since there isn't a concrete probable cause for investigation, so don't put too much pressure on yourself."

Ticho - Today at 3:01 PM
"I think that sounds feasible," Ticho responded as he took a sip from his mug. Lunchtime was limited after all and he would need to start eating now if he wanted to avoid going to his next class on an empty stomach. The thought alone of doing so nearly made him feel ill as he had Calculus 3 next. It was everything he disliked about Calculus, but in 3D.

"I was planning to reach out to him again soon anyway. My hope was that giving him a bit of time to get his story straight might help discern the truths or lack thereof in his claims. I'll contact you as soon as I have more information. Will there be anything else sir?"

Juch - Today at 3:04 PM
"I think that will be all for now," Juch answered back; it was certainly a good plan, and it fit together very nicely. If this worked out well, it would be a service to the community, and he would get to see more of Ticho's capabilities in problem solving, "There's no need to make a mountain out of a molehill, and excessive planning right from the very beginning won't be necessary, from my own experiences. Will you be free tonight then, Ticho? I can come see you at your work place after working hours, and we can regroup and discuss where to go from there."

Ticho - Today at 3:11 PM
"Tonight works. As it so happens, we're closing a little early so our maintainance team can take care of a few leaks. I'll be free around 8 if that works for you," the scholar responded as he took a bite from his sandwich, quickly pressing the mute button before doing so to avoid chewing in Juch's ear.

Juch - Today at 3:20 PM
"Eight o clock?" Juch repeated as he took a look at his own schedule. Running through the list, the android nodded back even though the Saiyan probably couldn't see the gesture, "Yes, that would work well for me as well. In that case, I shall see you then. Good day."

With the phone clicking off after the doctor bid his farewell, Juch stood up and walked away. It seemed that he had some reading to do.

----

Later that night, Juch's figure came into view in front of Ticho's company. It was a few minutes early, but the android liked to be on time and punctual. So at the designated time, he walked up towards the Saiyan's office and a gentle trio of knocks echoed in the hallway.

Ticho - Today at 3:28 PM
"I see, so you had only recently acquired the property?" Ticho repeated into the phone. Now sitting in his office, he had managed to reach out to the current owner of the building on Trevnar Square. "Got it, that clears up a lot. We're more than happy to look into this matter. I will be overseeing the investigation personally along with a colleague of mine. Once we've gotten everything situated, I will reach out to you with my current offer. Thank you for your time and have a good evening."

Just as the conversation ended, the young saiyan heard a light knock at the door. Looking up at the clock, he noticed that it was only a couple minutes before eight. No doubt it was Juch, but Ticho would not make assumptions before the door was open. "Come in!" the scholar responded just loud enough to be heard from the other side of the door.

Juch - Today at 3:45 PM
The door opened and the professor looked in, "Good evening, Ticho," Juch nodded, as he opened the door all the way and walked in, "Had a busy day today, I assume?"

He held up a small bag, in which some small bits of refreshments and snacks from the convenience store peeked out from the top, "Here, help yourself. Have you had dinner yet?"

Ticho - Today at 3:49 PM
"Evening professor," responded Ticho initially as he gestured to the open seat in front of him. With a calm smile, he accepted the bag that was held out for him. "Thank you very much. I actually had to keep dinner light to keep up with production. Closing up shop early often has drawbacks of it's own as you might imagine."
Popping one of the snacks into his mouth, the scholar pulled out a piece of paper on which he'd recently been writing. "Seems our associate has only owned that property for a couple of weeks now, but had heard rumors of strange disappearences. He'd thought nothing of it until he sent his own team to start his own project and his men began disappearing one by one. He has graciously allowed us to investigate the property at our convenience."

Juch - Today at 4:08 PM
"Another law of conservation," a light laugh followed Juch's hand that handed over the snacks to the younger scholar, "No such luck with a free lunch, is there?"

With that, the professor took one of the seats opposite Ticho's. The lad was very hard working, even if it meant giving some of his dinner for it. However, as the Saiyan continued regarding his findings, the android nodded in agreement, "It matches with the information I found. The previous owner belonged to a Ms. Kantemi Kozuni, but she passed away in an accident a few months ago. The lot never found a new owner until a few weeks ago, which matches up with the testimony."

"Still, it is encouraging that we are given permission," Juch continued with a soft smile, "And indeed it seemed like something is strange. People disappearing left and right just...just doesn't happen."

A light cough was followed by the dabbing of a white handkerchief over his mouth, "Do you happen to have the layout of the property on hand, then, Ticho?"

Ticho - Today at 4:24 PM
"Indeed I have," reponded the saiyan between bites before reaching into his desk. "It should be in here somewhere. We needed it to plan the office building once we acquired the property" Ticho shuffled through papers for a moment before pulling a pair of them from the desk. Laying them on top, he spread the two out so they could be compared side by side. "On my right, you can see what the property looked like before it was purchased a few weeks ago. On my left, you'll see it's current state after it's current owner Mr. Rubino abandoned his current project. There's little difference between the two, but I wondered if it might show any clues as to what we should look for."

Juch - Today at 4:42 PM
Ah very good. Ticho did have the plans--as expected. Juch leaned over from the other side of the desk as his gaze fell onto the two pieces before him. His gaze turned from the one on Ticho's right and towards the left, "Hmm, I see, I see," the professor murmured, "Indeed, there is little difference..."

He trailed off. Little, but not nonexistent. There was one thing that stood out to the android, "What about...this here," his gloved finger landed on the current portrayal, "There seems to be something different about the basement here. Is that an...extra room?"
Ticho - Today at 5:17 PM
The saiyan nodded. "Indeed. I was thinking that maybe a good place to start, but here's the kicker," replied Ticho as he sipped his coffee. "Mr. Rubino had no plans to expand. He was simply going to fix up the building as is. I didn't think much of it at the time, but I think he may have stumbled upon a concealed room."

Juch - Today at 5:36 PM
"Very interesting," Juch frowned, "If he did not have any intent to add to the layout, then this difference may be what you have proposed. In which case, we may have to be careful about approaching this part of the house."

"There are at least two entrances that lead to the basement from what I can see. Is that just for the standard safety measures for fire escapes?" Juch pointed to the locations, "Neither are very close to this additional room, so we have our options to how we approach it. Possibly, each one of us can take a different entrance--which will cover more ground, but being together may be a safer bet. Of course, first things first would be to check the other rooms first before we head down to the basement right away, but this may be key."

Ticho - Today at 6:25 PM
"Not to my knowledge. It's kinda odd that there would be 2 seperate entrances.," responded the scholar, scratching his head as to why more than 1 entrance to the basement was needed. "Regardless, I see no reason to split up when delving into this basement. If we feel both entrances need be investigated, we can check the other one on our way out. Do you have time now or do we need to plan to investigate at a later date?"

Juch - Today at 6:38 PM
"Mm, mm, then it is rather strange indeed, isn't it?" Juch tilted his head, "Well, I guess we'll have to see it for ourselves when we get there," he looked back up at Ticho, "I do have time to look at it now...but I don't want to you to investigate on an empty stomach."

He chuckled, "Go on and finish what you'd like first. We have some time..."
