Pictures began to form, fuzzy at first but his ocular receptors quickly responded to feedback from the neural net beneath the fuzzy dome of the creature’s head. Further response circulated from the central processing unit in the chest that gave clarity to the responses from the neural net. It was an infantile creation and would rely on the CPU to contribute higher “brain” functioning for the time being. Android R was an experimental machine, designed to see if an AI could learn as a child would. Within the neural net was the potential for a whole mind, assuming of course that the creature could survive long enough to realise its potential. These scientists were risking a great deal of money on this investment: failure could mean an end to their careers or worse, their lives.
“Android R, can you hear me?”
Again, the neural net fired, recognising what was going on but unable to comprehend it. The meaning of the words was supplied in response to an unvoiced query to the CPU.
“Yes."
The appropriate affirmative response was encoded by the CPU but provided by the neural net.
“Do you remember your mission?”
This time the neural net understood and comprehended. The mission was hardwired: a failsafe in case of CPU malfunction. Even damaged beyond repair the android would remember its mission.
“Yes.”
Learning as it was, the neural net didn’t need to query the CPU for an appropriate response.
“Good. It is time for you to leave then.”
Android R nodded; a response that had been supplied with the appropriate affirmative response. There was another failsafe built into his programming. In telling him that it was time to leave, his designer initialised it. Android R’s memory was not recording yet, and the passphrase told him that it would not begin recording for another four hours. It was a largely arbitrary timeframe but would allow him to get far from the underground Technopolis before he began making memories of his new life.
History:
Not all within the Empire were ready for the borders to open. Not all counselled the Emperor to reveal himself once more. They were not ready; their weapons were not set. There had been too many setbacks. The learning brain that they had promised the Emperor had a fatal flaw. In each and every one of the tests, the brain had concluded that Damaskia was the enemy. Not only was this an unsatisfactory result for the weapons program, it was anathema to the Emperor, himself. Clark Pendragon did not suffer fools and he tolerated failure even less. For their failure to produce a viable weapon the program was shut down. For their slight against Damaskia, they were decimated. One in ten were executed publicly and humiliatingly. The rest were fired and lived out their days in shame. Or so the Emperor thought.
In actuality, they couldn’t let it go. They were zealots and couldn’t accept that the Empire was wrong, nor could they accept that their ideas were flawed. By begging, borrowing, stealing, laundering and everything in between, they bankrolled the operation. For two years the group toiled fruitlessly, until one of the lesser scientists had an idea. They had been trying to imprint the neural net with all of the learning that it would attain through adolescence all at once. What if they included another brain to guide the neural net through its adolescence? From there the program accelerated in leaps and bounds. What would be the eighteenth and final prototype became a fully realised android, Android R. The creature was designed to be small and easily overlooked, like a house pet.
This was its key advantage, for the creature possessed no innate ki abilities. What it could do better than any other was use the abundance of technology that was in the lab to create weapons that were the equal of ki attacks.
