There was a red, blinking light distracting Adrian. It wouldn't normally have been a problem, but he was trying to relax. He was looking out a window, and his view was incredible. Outside of the glass was the Earth, larger than life. It was larger than anything he could have imagined, filling his vision and so bright it made his eyes water.
The Earth was getting larger.

The Earth was getting larger.
Adrian shifted back in his seat and sighed. It would be the single most beautiful thing he'd ever seen, if it hadn't been for the light. He guessed that he was just unlucky. Unhurriedly, Adrian reached out and grabbed the thermos in the carrier attached to the control panel. Without looking, he flicked it open with a thumb. The coffee was terrible, but it was warm and had enough sugar and cream to be palatable. After a few swallows the little that had been left was gone. Chuckling, Adrian tossed it behind him.
Instead of the metal on metal of the thermos striking the deck, there was a soft thunk. This angle, that'd be the Captain, he thought. He didn't have to look back. The dead members of the bridge crew were burned into his memory permanently. Well, permanently for the next two and a half minutes before the ship hit the atmosphere. At this angle and with the shields down it was going to be a lot like a sheet of glass hitting concrete at two hundred miles an hour.
Still, the view couldn't be beat. It was the crew's own fault they couldn't be here to see it. Adrian's eyes narrowed as he remembered. He was just a mechanic, a low-ranked wrench monkey who wasn't privy to the plans of the bigwigs. That was why he'd been the last person on the ship to find out about the plan. The orders.
Seven rods of iron fired from outside orbit to get up to relativistic speeds, aimed at the seven largest population centers on the planet. The perfect opening salvo is a war that would ruin Earth. Adrian had grown up in a third-rate habitat around Mars. He'd never even been to the cradle of humanity. All he could think about was all the people of those cities. Living their lives. Raiding their families. Hundreds of millions of them.
Something had snapped. Slowly, methodically, he worked his way through the ship. The crew was already at critically low levels, something Adrian now recognized as mission secrecy. During the last night before they reached Earth he moved through the ship, using his mechanic's access to get into each occupied personnel's quarters. His largest wrench, used to open the radiation screens on the singularity engine, was made of a material which was incredibly stain resistant.
The worst part had been the bridge. Even night shift had four crew members. But they were officers. Leaders and experts in their fields, sure, but physically weak. Adrian had been augmented for manual labor three times in the last five years. Ceramic bone lacing, synthetic muscle tissue woven into the natural, ligament and tendon strengthening. He didn't have the combat training they did, but did that matter when you were a mountain of muscle wielding a ceramasteel wrench 1.5 meters long with the element of surprise.
So now he sat here, in the Captain's chair. Watching the Earth get bigger. It was so beautiful.
A fist slammed into control panel.
No more red light.
