The battlefield today would be a massive roman style colosseum. It’d been built to draw tourists to the area and was typically where contractors would be paid to slay animals or fight each other for the entertainment of the masses. Well, today it was opened for people to come and spar each other for practice’s sake. Goku spotted the arena at a distance while flying around and decided to go check it out. “It’s been a while since I had a good spar,” he thought.
Goku landed at the center of the colosseum and quickly beat the several that challenged him with simple ki blasts. These people weren’t challenges at all, much to his disappointment. He supposed his main advantage came from how mobile he was without armor – most every opponent he faced was too weighed down that they couldn’t even land a hit.
“Is there anyone here that can actually fight?” Goku asked, shouting so that everyone could hear him. If not, he’d wasted his time coming here and would probably just go get some food and be done with this place. Goku didn’t have a scouter or the ability to sense ki so he always had a hard time finding worthy opponents.
"Are you a Saiyan?" Maverick asked from behind Goku.
He had been watching Goku fight for some time now, and he was impressed. Goku seemed skilled and had dispatched his foes with martial arts prowess and superior technique. Maverick had hoped that the man was a Saiyan. After his last tussle with Cado, Maverick was itching for another bout with a member of the Saiyan race. Even the setting was similar to before. He thought he could see what looked like a tail around the man's waste, a sure sign of a Saiyan, however, he fought completely differently than Cado had and looked much...well...weaker. Nevertheless, he had spent all day at the colosseum and nobody else had really piqued his interest all that much.
"I think that you are, but I could be mistaken. Perhaps we should test it."
Maverick spoke in a matter-of-fact manner, almost a relaxed smugness. He didn't wait for Goku to fully reply to his inquiry. Instead, he immediately flicked two fingers on his right hand upwards into the air. Suddenly the ground beneath Goku exploded outward in a Bakuhatsuha that the Kekko contained just enough so as not to also endanger those in the audience.

Goku turned to face the person who was questioning him. Was he a Saiyan? He was, though he had only ever lived among humans. He didn’t want to get into identity politics though. He was about to respond when suddenly the ground exploded beneath him. Goku screamed in anger and pain as a massive cloud of dust and debris filled the air covered the colosseum in an instant.
Goku had somehow survived the blast, though it certainly did its fair share of damage. His entire body was covered in cuts and his legs had several gashes in them that didn’t look pretty. None of that was visible at the moment though. All that could be seen through the dust cloud would be dancing sparks around Goku’s body which indicated that he had transformed into his quasi-super Saiyan state. The sparks would soon be accompanied by a glowing blue orb that would be shot right at where Maverick had been standing moments before. “HAAAA!” Goku shouted as the Kamehameha was launched from his outstretched palms. At this point he didn’t care if he hit anything or not, he just wanted to create some visibility since he couldn’t see or even sense ki.
Based on the fact his Bakuhatsuha seemed to completely engulf his would-be opponent, Maverick half expected to find that he had just murdered the man. He was pleasantly surprised when a beam was fired back at him through the cloud of dust and debris. His feelings of pleasantry were fleeting as he sensed the strength behind the approaching attack. That thing was for real. He grunted.
"Yaaahhh!" Maverick yelled a moment before the beam would have hit him. He allowed the beam to connect with his forearm and in a quick sweeping motion, Deflected its momentum so that it would be diverted around him. To the untrained eye, it appeared as if Maverick had effortlessly swiped the attack aside like a pesky mosquito, however, it had actually taken quite a bit of his strength to accomplish this spectacular feat and he was completely unable to control the new trajectory of the deflected attack. As such, it simply careened into the portion of the colosseum behind him, taking a chunk out of the structure and likely dozens of spectators with it as the beam continued off over the horizon. Other people around started screaming.
Impressive, Maverick thought. Clearly he was right. This man was a Saiyan.
Even though he couldn't see him through the smokescreen, the King of Rarities could sense Goku and knew exactly where he was within the slowly dissipating dust cloud. His next test would be to see if Goku shared the same ability.
He hovered just a few inches from the ground so that Goku could not hear any footsteps on his approach, and then flew in a straight line directly at his foe. He fired a right straight at what he sensed was Goku's jaw.
The sound of Goku's beam getting deflected was accompanied by the sounds of metal crashing onto the ground. The humans who'd been caught in the blast had finally fallen along with all their equipment. Then came the sounds of crumbling stone and the inevitable screams. Goku only cared to notice these things because he had to rely on his senses now. Smell was useless, but he could still use his ears.
"Damn," he muttered as he peered through the hole that his kamehameha had punched through the debris. His opponent wasn't there anymore.
Goku took off, assuming that his opponent could sense him, however shortly after his jaw was smashed sending him flying to the ground again. Great, he wasn't fast enough to hear or smell the enemy in time. Goku would be damned if he'd get his ass beat by someone he couldn't see.
"Fuck this!" Goku shouted. In one fluid motion he activated the capsule that contained the mafuba fan and then he swung it at full power to send the debris away in an instant. And here he was thinking that the fan was only good for one thing.
"Damn that was annoying," goku said, tossing the fan aside. "Who are you anyway?" He'd ask Maverick while slowly increasing his power level to its maximum.
Maverick began coughing and choking as the smoke and debris were somehow blown away from Goku and toward him in one massive gust of air. He covered his eyes behind his forearm but it did little good to combat the gale force winds. What immense power and untold skill this Saiyan must have over the elements to do something like this! Even the all-powerful *squint* couldn't stop the fine particulate from blowing into his eyes. Maverick's eyes began to water and he worried about a counter attack.
As quickly as it began, it was over.
"Damn that was annoying," the man said.
You're tellin' me, Maverick thought as he profusely rubbed his eyes dry with his palms.
"Who are you anyway?" Goku asked him.
Through watery eyes, Maverick saw Goku toss a large fan idly to the ground. It disappointed him to learn that the awe-inspiring feat had been little more than mechanically-aided trickery.
A few more seconds of palm rubbing and the Kekko was composed enough to answer.
"My name is Maverick, I came looking for a worthy opponent to practice against and have heard Saiyans were legendary for their battle prowess. But...you haven't even landed a single blow. Come now, let's see if you can do better." With that, Maverick settled back into a martial arts stance awaiting Goku's next advance.
Goku frowned at Maverick’s taunt. He wanted to come up with something witty to say but the man was right. That was going to change though, because Goku’s only obstacle had been removed from the equation. Goku could see now and it looked like Maverick had been disadvantaged by the effects of the fan. Great!
Goku’s image faded from view as the saiyan speed teleported past Maverick and attempted to perform a roundhouse kick to the man’s back followed by a series of follow up speed teleports and strike attempts from every direction. Goku did not want to give his enemy the chance to retaliate. Not at least until Goku had at least proven that he was a formidable opponent.
When Goku was burnt out on speed teleports he would draw his katana and chuck it as hard as he could at Maverick’s center of mass for good measure. It wasn’t like Goku could even use the damn thing properly so it wouldn’t be missed. The force of the throw sent Goku skidding backwards in the dirt until his back hit the wall of the colosseum. He didn’t like his positioning because it meant his escape route was blocked if he needed to make a break for it.
He's fast, Maverick thought as he saw Goku disappear from view. His eye twitched.
But not fast enough.
Maverick glimpsed the Saiyan's movements and spun on his heels right as Goku re-appeared behind him. He smirked. The silver-haired Kekko threw a forearm into Goku's roundhouse, not only blocking it but also hopefully throwing Goku's balance off which would allow for Maverick to counter at-- Goku suddenly disappeared again.
This time Maverick was unable to react quickly enough and a right cross adjusted his jawline against his will. The smirk faded. No sooner did the attack land than did Goku once again disappear and reappear in another speed teleport, this time slugging him with an uppercut that sent him staggering. He glared up at Goku wild-eyed only to see that the man had hurled a sword at him!
"Tch!" Maverick spat as he himself speed teleported, evading the tip of the blade fatally stabbing him with less than a second to spare. Much like Cado had, Goku's explosiveness surprised him. It seemed he had some moves after all. Now it was his turn.
He mimicked Goku's initial attack by re-appearing directly behind the Saiyan. Rather than a roundhouse, though, Maverick's hands were clasped with the fingers interlaced as he aimed a hammerblow directly at the base of the man's neck - a knockout blow.

Goku was happy to see that his combo had gone according to plan. That was about as fast as he could go so if he were to die here he would at least have the satisfaction that he had given it his all. Goku cupped his hands together to charge a finishing blow. A ball of red ki would form in his hands and Goku poured the entirety of his remaining ki into his finisher Kamehameha. It was the only way he could think of making use of his temporary lead.
“You shouldn’t have fucked with me! Take this!” he shouted but Goku had to blink twice when he noticed that Maverick had disappeared. Goku saw the sword skidding across the ground but no Maverick. Goku turned his head back and forth and suddenly, the lights went out. Goku felt a sharp pain in the back of his neck and that was that. Goku’s flight shut off and he fell into the small crater formed by Maverick’s attack from earlier. The sound of bones crushing echoed throughout the arena when Goku finally made contact with the ground.
With any luck Goku would wake up alive, but he wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up dead… again.
Maverick adjusted his lapels and brushed some dust from the front of his clothing. He had put Goku to sleep, true, but had a feeling that he and the Saiyan would be meeting again someday on another battlefield. He also knew that Saiyans only grew stronger and stronger over time. Goku's current strength had indeed surprised him but it was almost as if he could already feel Goku's power level increase even as he lay there out cold. The next meeting would be even more of a challenge.
The King of Rarities merely nodded, and took off into the distance.
