booze, books, and barkley Ember & Puar Ember WC: 1,907 Barkley WC: 2,079 Total WC: 3,986 Ember Passives: Champion I |
Ember shelved the book in Satan City library, and pulled out another one titled "How to Win Friends & Influence People", before taking one look at the back cover, which was littered with too many words, and tucking it back in the small slot it had previously sat in. The library was dusty, quiet, and only occupied at the moment by herself and an old woman behind a desk, hawk eyes monitoring her every move. She completely understood that the woman didn't trust her, but still felt slightly annoyed at how she seemed to think Ember was there to steal. Walking to the next aisle, she was in the middle of pulling a book with a colorful spine from its place on the shelf, when she heard footsteps to her left and tensed.
⋆ ★
Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. The footsteps went, and fire red hair bounced each time. "Let's see," the young woman said, her voice in a small hush and yet very audible with how close she was to Ember. "I think I am in the wrong aisle to be honest." Her attire was quite scholarly, dressed in a robe that draped down to her ankles, hiding most of her other attire that could only be gathered in glances. A white collared shirt. A natural lengthen skirt. Oh, not to forget the cute blue tie which matched the oceanic pupils that scanned over the books until those same eyes fell upon Ember.
And then she smiled. "Hi," she said before her gaze moved again to meet the librarian. Then those same eyes came back to her. "I do hate Earthling Librarians. So nosy, aren't they?"
⋆ ★
Ember smiled at the girl, blowing a lock of her own crimson hair out of her face, and letting her fingers drop the colorful book back to the spot it had almost gotten free of. She surveyed the girl, who seemed like an enigma to her. She looked like she was possibly a student at Satan City University, so Ember was confused as to why the girl didn't run away yelling about the Fae woman's strange appearance. Golden eyes, flaming crimson hair, and pointed ears that peeked through the strands that she hadn't brushed for days - due to a lack of not having enough funds to stay at a tavern. Suddenly, Ember felt fairly out of place. She donned a black leather tunic that had seen its fair share of battles and blood, along with brown leather boots and a belt that hung over her ample waist, allowing her to reach things she may need conveniently - her water canteen, made of pigskin, some herbs for small remedies, and a serrated dagger - along with a scouter her friend had given her.
Ember realized she had gotten a little too focused on her appearance, and felt her face turn hot, before replying, "I have to admit, I've never interacted with human librarians before. Judging from how you addressed her," she jerked her chin in the direction of the cranky woman, "You're probably not from here, or you hang around a lot of aliens too." She gave her another sheepish smile. "I'm Ember. Half-Fae."
⋆ ★
"Barkley Cass," came out of the young woman's mouth to complete their introduction. Ember's appearance was definitely different than those around here and on this planet, mostly anyway. The planet still did have its fair share of weirdos, walking dog kings and out of place dinosaurs who seemed to have survived on this version of Earth. Eyes of golden caught jewels of sapphire easily, however, Barkley finding it a challenge to look away from Ember's shy gaze and cute smile.
Ember was right in her assumption, Barkley wasn't from here even though she smelled and felt pretty much pure human. "I have to deal with them a lot in my line of work, unfortunately," Barkley said in response to the dealings of human librarians. "I live on Kelioux, a planet that is in another star system. Yup I hang with a lot of aliens. It is nice to meet you Ember! No wonder you are pretty, Fae are such pretty beings."
Barkley's compliment eased out of her mouth like silk, both smooth and soft. "I was definitely wondering about your heritage. You have cute ears." Barkley then squinted her eyes. "You haven't brushed your hair in forever though, its going to knot up if you aren't careful."
⋆ ★
Ember smiled and stuck her hand out towards the woman, before the compliments came. She smiled and scratched her ear, which was now as hot as her face. Ember didn't take compliments very well, but she really appreciated them when they came - she very rarely grew up hearing them - instead hearing words of hatred, such as half breed, mutt, Unseelie, spoken to her. She never did care to talk to people much after that point. "You're really sweet. It's nice to meet you too, Barkley. Fae are beautiful, but they can have black hearts at times. That's part of the reason I left." When the girl mentioned her hair, she felt her hand go to it, and try to comb through it with her fingertips. "I know, I haven't had a contract in a while, so I haven't been able to find a nice hotel to stay at. If I did, my hair would look a little bit better." She laughed softly, eliciting a "SHH!" from the librarian.
Ember merely rolled her eyes and turned back to Barkley. "So, what brings you here? I came because I just wanted to find something to do. I haven't had much work lately, so I try and fill my time by learning as much about the human lands as I can. It's just a happy coincidence when I meet new people."
⋆ ★
The shushing from the librarian also caught an eye roll from Barkley but soon after she was back to looking to Ember again. She soaked in what she was being told by the halfing and Barkley took in the subtle things about how she reacted to her compliments.
"Work," she stated simply. "A librarian at the Kelioux Academy has a different job description that miss shushkins over there. I am on book retrieval duty. Apparently, some idiot returned one of our books here, thinking that we are all in the same branch."
This was the part Barkley went on and on about her job. "Earth books are normal. Keliouxian books, however, are.... a little," she trailed off as her eyes caught something in the distance.
"Bit...." Her attention had been robbed by something moving. It was a small something as well, which scurried across the floor in a panic, knowing it was seen finally. It was a book with legs! It took off in a frenzy and Barkley lunged on top of it with great form and speed, trapping the front and back covers of the book on the ground.
"TRICKY!" She yelled while holding it down and letting it struggle. The book even made whimpering noises.
"Aht, Aht. Don't act like the victim you were about to run away from me, '34,000 Ways to Escape Unnoticed'. Out of all the ways you couldn't outsmart me? Tch. Tch. Tch."
Barkley then looked up to Ember and there was a nervous grin. "Sorry, I didn't mean to trail off like that."
⋆ ★
Ember grinned at the invitation to see a different planet - to be able to explore a library - or even the city, and the nightlife. She nodded eagerly, before looking down at her own clothes and placing a hand to her hair. She blushed at the implication of a date, but brushed it off. She hadn't ever been with a woman before, but she had definitely considered it. Taking the safe route, and deciding on letting it go until she could get a feel for their dynamic, she nodded excitedly.
"I would absolutely love to do that. It could be like a..." She searched for the words she had heard a few obviously intoxicated human women cheer over and over, their words slurring as they did so. "A girl's night!"
She really hoped that Barkley would say yes - she didn't have any female friends, and the idea of going to a tavern and getting a little tipsy with someone, and bonding felt like such a breath of fresh air compared to sitting on a couch with Nappa and watching reality shows.
⋆ ★
"Yes a girl's night out!" Barkley took Ember's excitement as consent, and she could have been wrong but Barkley was a reader and a gambler all the same, just like one of her favorite girl friends.
Maybe Bailey was rubbing off on her then. With one hand already on the book she captured, the other extended, her hands opening. "Take my hand then."
Barkley had never stopped smiling since they have been talking.
⋆ ★
Ember grinned and grabbed Barkley's hand, her fingers closing over the other woman's.
Excitement flooded through her at the idea of visiting a new planet - of being able to see a new place with a possible new friend.
"Do you guys have liquor?"
⋆ ★
"Oh? at my house? Yes," Barkley said as Ember grabbed her hand. Now that she had the halfing in her grasp, she pulled her backwards, forming a dimensional rip and closing the space between Earth and her Keliouxian home in an instant.
Traveling between those spaces were instant and sometimes jarring as the area around them would instantly change from books to a small drive-way, a house, and a small wooded area around them. Barkley pulled them right to the mailbox -- well right next to it anyway and a cute house was before them.
"My dad has a bar inside," she stated and without any kind of grand gesture. It was as if traveling this way was common place to her. "My parents aren't at this house right now. Thankfully, I don't want them scaring you off."
⋆ ★
Ember grinned and the next moment, she was being pulled into what seemed like a portal. The movement surprised her, since she hadn't been through a portal since her arrival in Satan City, but she managed to catch herself before falling face-first into the gravel they appeared on. A cute little home sat in front of them, and Ember listened to Barkley's statement. She was glad that they wouldn't have to deal with the girl's parents, but it didn't stop her curiousity from peaking.
"Wait, how old are you? I'm only twenty-six, but I know some planets don't allow younglings to drink." She rubbed her hand on her neck, smiling shyly at the other woman.
⋆ ★
"Twenty-two," Barkley said in response to her age. Barkley walked to the door and opened it, showing off a pretty basic set up for the home -- it was neat though and clean.
"Not much to see here. Typical house, and down stairs is the bar -- basement style." Barkley didn't really spend time to display the home as she walked to a door and opened it, showing it led downward. Upon walking down the area opened up and there were round tables and seats at each one -- and then there was the bar with an assortment of liquor lining the cabinet.
⋆ ★
Ember smiled and ran her finers through her hair, before following the other woman into the house, and letting the warmth seep into her bones. It felt cozy. She loved how inviting the home felt, and even as Barkley walked quickly through, she found herself staring at photos of what seemed to be Barkley as a young child, and people that must have been her parents.
The half-Fae followed her down the stairs towards the bar, her eyes still trailing over the walls, and smiled as they reached the bar with circular tables and soft, plush chairs. She grinned over at Barkley, her cheeks feeling quite hot as she spoke.
"Do you want me to make you a drink?"
The offer was gentle, and laced with kindness. Ember probably didn't realize that her voice also held a sensual tone to it - but she walked towards the bar and leaned her arms on the cool marble, looking back at Barkley for an answer.
"I'm not the best bartender, but I know quite a few drinks."
⋆ ★
Barkley sat down at the bar, placing the book down. Ember's voice slipped into Barkley's ears like a soothing whisper that invaded the insides of her body, sending shivers from head to toe.
But Barkley only responded with a smile. It was a smile that was as sweet as vanilla laced with grounded gingerbread pieces. "Make me a drink," she said with a voice more sensual in tone than the slipping tone that came out of Ember's lips.
"I don't come to the bar for the best drinks, just the cutest bartenders -- those are the best bartenders to me."
Barkley leaned forward, her cheek supported by her hand with ease and her sapphire eyes trapped on Ember's golden ones.
⋆ ★
Ember felt her cheeks flush at the other woman's words - Barkley thought she was cute? Was she imagining things? No, the blue eyes baring into hers, keeping her locked into position were signal enough to that.
After a few long moments of searching oceans of sapphire, she swallowed and broke her gaze, turning towards the bar and surveying the bottles. She bounced a little on the spot as she looked, trying to ignore the way her stomach was flopping like a fish out of water.
She ran her fingers over a glass bottle labeled "Vodka", and pulled two glasses from the rack above the bar, setting them down gently on their bases. She poured a small amount into her own, and took the shot straight, not bothering to mix it.
Liquid courage, indeed, she thought as the liquor began to warm her from the inside out, spreading to her chest and cheeks, no doubtedly making her flush even more.
Finding a container with red carmine liquid in it - and checking to make sure that it was indeed what she'd hoped it was - she unscrewed the plastic lid and poured equal parts vodka and equal parts cranberry juice into the other woman's glass, sliding it towards her. Only when she had poured her own drink did she sit, wrapping one arm around her midsection and sipping the drink slowly.
"It's called...I think it's a Cosmopolitan. I had it one time in the human realm."
She blushed again as she met eyes with Barkley, and lowered her own quickly, attempting to conceal how nervous she felt. Why was she reacting this way? It wasn't as if women hadn't looked at her so sensually before - so why did Barkley's sapphire gaze light a fire under her skin?
⋆ ★
Barkley showed just how much she enjoyed Ember's cute reaction to being called cute, by being at the edge of giggling. Each time Ember would meet Barkley's eyes they looked as if they had never stopped staring at the Fae. There were times she did look away, but would Ember ever find out?
Maybe. But not now, every time she looked to Barkley, the young girl was still looking at her. Even as she explained the mixture that she put together. Barkley nodded and took the glass to her lips for a simple sip, her eyes simmering a bit and a sigh escaping.
"Good," she let out while putting the glass to the side. Barkley didn't let the nervousness go unnoticed, and she reached her hand out to try and cup Ember's chin and lift her gaze back to her own.
"Relax baby, I think I found something for you to do," she whispered, referencing one of the first things Ember said during their first meet -- going to the library searching for something to do. Barkley leaned over the bar, pushing her lips closer to Ember's for a subtle and sweet connection.
There was no hesitation, as if Barkley had done this more times than many.
⋆ ★
Ember felt her breath hitch as the woman's soft lips pressed into hers, but she didn't break the kiss.
What is happening?
Her heart thundered in her chest, the vein in her neck thrumming excitedly from the contact that their lips made. She pressed her lips against the other woman's lips, deepening the kiss slightly, and let her eyes flutter closed.
Ember didn't really know how to feel about this -- she had never kissed a woman - she didn't even know if she had had a kiss this... tender with a male before.
A few moments passed, and she broke the kiss, hesitating as she did so - she wanted to keep kissing Barkley, to see if she wanted to move further.
"I...I've never done that before," She mumbled, her breath warm on the other woman's lips. "I--I mean..."
If her cheeks were already pink, they had now turned crimson. She didn't mean to imply that she'd never had a kiss before - she had, but something about kissing a woman felt so much different than the rushed, hurried kisses a male would give her.
"I... I've never kissed a girl before."
⋆ ★
"Uh-uh," was the only noise that Barkley made after Ember broke the kiss to speak her confession. It was a confession that meant nothing to Barkley in this moment, because all that mattered right now was Ember's warm breath and soft lips -- which Barkley engaged in once again with that same lack of hesitation from before.
There was extra confidence now because of Ember's own hesitance in breaking the kiss herself, which gave Barkley the idea that the Fae wanted this and maybe even the entire time. There was a smile on her lips during the next phase of the kiss, one of joy and a bit of victory as well. The softness of her kiss felt less new and more natural with Barkley attempting to push Ember toward the ground behind the bar itself, hopping up onto the bar counter to do so.
There was aggression in her movements, but they way she caressed Ember's skin was just so soft and endearing -- as if she was gently peeling open the petals of a flower that had yet to blossom . Of course, the petals were the woman's clothing which would get in the way of all the things Barkley wanted to do to Ember behind the safety of the bar counter.
⋆ ★
Ember waited for a reaction from Barkley, and when she simply received a hum of affirmation, she nearly protested, but was stopped by Barkley’s lips crashing into her with hunger and fervor. A soft noise emitted from the half-Fae’s lips, and she brought a hand up, interlocking her fingers in the other woman’s hair, and tugging, hoping that she would oblige and show her neck to Ember.
If she did, Ember would wrap her lips around the soft flesh there, and draw it into her mouth with a soft inhale, hoping to elicit a noise of her own from Barkley.
She barely registered Barkley’s fingers clawing at her clothes, and moved her arms so that the other woman could have easier access.
⋆ ★
Barkley felt the shift in the shy and timid Ember the moment she tugged on her hair, craving control over the situation, if only for a moment and with a gentle and knowing smile Barkley obliged easily, exposed her neck to the Fae. She felt the tingle of exposure from that place, feeding off of anticipation and a knowing that her neck would be met with soft lips that would send a shock wave through her body from that spot, and when her neck felt them -- felt the inhale of breath which activated the shock wave of lust -- Barkley let out a slow gasping moan that could be nothing less than satisfaction brewing deep in her soul.
It caught Barkley by surprise some, thinking that she had found prey to eat today, as evil as that sounded. Barkley felt like the hunter in these scenarios, finding lovers and weakening them with their own lust and wanting. Bringing them to a submissive state as she took full advantage of them, kissing and poking around for weak spots and strengthening her own positioning. Normally it was harder to do that with men, as they naturally pushed to submit her and if they were strong enough she did.
But with women? She found it the easiest to pry for control -- most already naturally ready for submission. But this one had already begun to spiral Barkley into submission instead. Did Barkley want to submit today? Her neck was a weak point, as common as it was, and she felt a bit helplessly frozen as each kiss and suckle from Ember's lips sent shock waves from that spot down to her lower half, weakening her down to her knees even. This was becoming a battle that Barkley was sure to lose if she didn't pry back control, but these kind of battles Barkley knew that losing would bring her to a bliss she loved.
It was such a conflict. Control? Or be controlled? Moans continued to exit her mouth every now and again, most stifled as she tried to keep them back, feeling the shame of her exposure, but loving every bit of it. Her body began to move and squirm in ways that were uncontrolled and even though Barkley was much stronger than Ember, she felt weak --- just in one spot.
Fuck, I need to get out of this before she takes me, Barkley thought to herself -- surprised she could even think at all. Barkley was still young and her experience was great -- just not as much as she would like. Barkley was going to lose --
Boink.
The 34,000 ways to escape book jumped up and with massive hands, smacked at Barkley's face so hard that she would fall over and out of Ember's grasp for the moment. Of course, out of 34,000 ways to escape a dire situation, the book would have 1 for this apparently! The cock blocking method!
⋆ ★
The book.
That damned book.
The only thing that could have ruined the moment was if Barkley had pulled back, and she hadn't - she had moved and danced with Ember, allowing her to take control and continue her assault on her neck, to bite at the flesh there and marr it with a pretty red splotch that would surely form into a bruise. The noises that the other woman had been making were sign enough - and right as the half-Fae had moved her hands to push the girl against the counter, to start disrobing her and see how far they would take this, the damned book had slapped Barkley in the head.
Ember groaned, and pulled away - maybe there was a possibility that Barkley didn't want this, and that was why the book had come between the two.
She grabbed the book, clutching it closely to her chest, and trying to hide just how flustered she was now that the ardor-filled haze was attempting to clear.
"I...Sorry... I - I got carried away... I didn't... I'm sorry."
⋆ ★
Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. The footsteps went, and fire red hair bounced each time. "Let's see," the young woman said, her voice in a small hush and yet very audible with how close she was to Ember. She blushed again as she met eyes with Barkley, and lowered her own quickly, attempting to conceal how nervous she felt. Why was she reacting this way? It wasn't as if women hadn't looked at her so sensually before - so why did Barkley's sapphire gaze light a fire under her skin?

I didn't... I'm sorry."
