Kanda Kame was born for greatness. With a beautiful face and piercing eyes, his family regarded him as a gift from the heavens — a contentious issue, considering the cult he was born into. One of many members of the Cult of Eyes, Kanda was one of seven different possible prophets: one of the mighty beings that might lead their followers to great and dazzling heights. Unfortunately for the cult, Kanda Kame was also the only one without the ability to speak to spirits, and somehow, the only one who survived the Holy Night Massacre, wherein six of the seven prophet children were slaughtered in the middle of the night, alongside their parents. In the resulting confusion, the cult heralded Kanda as the coming of the one true spirit, he who might lead them to greatness. In an effort to appease the cult (and not be ripped to shreds in the religious fervor that would follow his admission if inadequacy), Kanda accepted their praise.

For better or worse, he also grew to believe it.
