Character Bio: Ikta Solork's father was a high-ranking military commander named Bada Solork. His mother was a noblewoman named Ida Himei. Ida was given to Bada Solork as tribute by a defeated King Himei. When Solork was 10 years old his father, Bada, was killed in battle. His mother Ida was deported to her ancestral land. Solork was placed in the child army.
Solork showed a natural aptitude for strategy and tactics. Bada Solork led multiple successful campaigns in his life but ultimately suffered a humiliating loss and a death without honor. Solork would not allow other children to mock his father without retaliation. He suffered severe injuries as a child while defending his father's name. Occasionally Bada's former second in command, Josu, would visit the child barracks. Josu was one of the few men who survived the battle in which Bada would perish. He was uncompassionate and demanded excellence of Solork so as not to further tarnish Bada's family name.
When Solork turned 15 he was transferred from the child barracks to command school. An elderly teacher, Yuzu, recognized him as Bada's son. Yuzu had also been Bada's teacher. The young man blossomed under the old teacher's guidance and learned much about his father that he had never heard before. Solork improved his prowess in the martial arts by training with Yuzu as often as possible in between studying for exams in logistics, tactics, and strategy. By age 17 Solork was at the top of his class in every category and was prepared to graduate a year ahead of the standard schedule.

Up close Shion's frame was extremely slight. She could have been blown from glass or carved from ice. He felt her hand in his and thought of a bird's wing. Solork could tell that Shion was foreign before she said so. Her accent wasn't from anywhere nearby. Or maybe it was the lack of an accent where one should be. He didn't think of it. There was no need to. If he asked why she was here or where she came from her answer wouldn't change anything for him. When he arrived he was expecting a lecture of the same kind he received in the academy about the values of technical diversity and conventional tactics. Instead, she seemed interested in him. He could sense it. It wasn't a compelling personal interest, it was a cold and professional one, the kind of interest a tradesman applies to new materials or tools. This was the only kind he could accept.
He heard her question but didn't respond right away. For a few seconds, and then a minute, he considered his answer. Then he fixed his eyes on hers and his demeanor changed subtly. A glimpse of tension showed in the way he stood. "I chose this path because I wanted to. But you would like to know the rationale behind that choice, so here it is." Solork pushed his hips forward and pulled his shoulders back. He took a deep gulp of fresh air.
"Given good fortune, I will have another sixty years in this life. Most of that time will be spent working. This is unavoidable, all men must work to survive. Consequently, I have chosen work that I enjoy. Otherwise, I will have chosen a life of torture.
The only way to find joy in my work is to do it the best way available to me. If work doesn't need to be done in the best way then it must not be important. It's suffering for a man to know his work results in nothing important. To work in any capacity less than the best demeans the importance of the task and the man with it.
There is work in every day. I work passionately for my mind and body. An unfathomable number of trials and errors over the course of eons have culminated in the evolved beauty of the human form. I enjoy testing my limits. I became a martial artist to experience my mind and body at their absolute best. My work is the destruction of my enemies."
