Champion II
Nappa stared intently into the water, completely focused on the task at hand. As time had passed, he had learned that focusing on power wasn’t entirely the most effective method of training for himself - due to his Saiyan genes, he’d been growing in Battle Power at an incredible rate; despite this, his few recent encounters had convinced him that he was still a novice in strategy, tactics, and martial arts.
He didn’t feel that simply growing whatever number would appear on his Scouter would solve this gap in his ability, so he had begun to start focusing on precision training, which was why he was knee deep in that river. He had asked Master Roshi for ideas on how to work on being more precise and concise with his movements, and the Turtle Hermit had led him to this river. Grinning, the old Master had asked him to “catch a fish” with his bare hands.
Nappa had assumed this task would be incredibly easy due to his amazing speed, but it actually was still somehow difficult. Between overshooting the mark, letting the fish escape from his fingers due to its slippery nature, and actually not being able to compare his own speed to his quarry’s to know where it would be when his hand went into the water, he was learning a lot.
After about an hour of failed tries, he finally closed his eyes and breathed slowly, deciding to become one with the river before he could attempt another grab. However, he felt something disturb his focus - he was being watched. Cracking open his eyes, he noticed a flash of fur around the waist of a man he’d never met before.
A Saiyan? They weren’t impossible to spot on Earth, but finding one in such a secluded area did pique his interest. “You lost?” he asked in what he hoped was a friendly voice. Word Count: 321 Nappa Word Count: 321

| Saiyan's brawl Tarble Word Count: 430/430 |
Tarble soared through the sky with a newfound swiftness, his heart brimming with exhilaration after emerging victorious in the Earth and Beyond Tournament. The chance to display his strength before the sprawling audience had ignited an uncontainable enthusiasm within him. His course was set for Master Roshi's abode, where he intended to recuperate before resuming his rigorous training regimen. Yet, as he approached the secluded island, a peculiar sight caught his eye.
Knee-deep in the water stood a massive figure, its immense frame periodically plunging a hand into the depths. Tarble, determined not to disrupt the mysterious presence, gently descended towards the island. As he drew nearer, the colossal figure's sheer size became apparent. His bicep alone dwarfed Tarble's entire body, and even in a crouched position, he loomed taller than the young Saiyan. It was then that Tarble's gaze settled upon a tail, unmistakably marking the stranger as a fellow Saiyan.
The revelation left Tarble bewildered, his mind racing with questions. Was this Saiyan here to reclaim him for their homeworld? Had his father dispatched this warrior to eliminate him, or was he one of the formidable fighters Master Roshi had spoken of?
"A Saiyan... How can there be another Saiyan here?" Tarble pondered, his confusion deepening. "Is he here to take me back to our planet? Was he sent by my father to end me, or could he be one of the powerful warriors Master Roshi mentioned?"
The Saiyan warrior broke the silence, his penetrating gaze seeming to pierce Tarble's very soul. Without his scouter, Tarble couldn't gauge the extent of the stranger's power, leaving him to imagine the dire consequences if one of those massive fists were to meet his face. But Tarble quickly regained his resolve.
"I am a Saiyan, and I bear the pride of our race. No force in the universe will make me tremble," Tarble resolved inwardly, mustering his courage.
"No, I'm not lost," Tarble replied with unwavering determination, meeting the Saiyan's intense gaze head-on.
"I began training with Master Roshi just a week ago. I was observing your training, curious about your technique. Are you practicing against your own reflection in the water?" Tarble inquired, his voice steady, despite the tension in the air.
With a bold move, Tarble removed the upper portion of his Saiyan armor, standing in the sunlight with only his black leggings. It was a deliberate display, a gesture meant to convey his fearlessness to the Saiyan warrior. Tarble wanted to make it clear that he would return to Planet Vegeta on his own terms, unyielding and resolute.

“No.” Nappa was taken aback by the intensity of the response; had he offended the young man? Nappa didn’t really know how to fix the situation; aggression from Saiyans wasn’t exactly something he found uncommon, but this man didn’t seem aggressive, but angry. He wasn’t looking for a fight, but he was ready for anything.
His voice leveled out as he kept talking, as though the anger was more of an act than anything else. In the end, he actually inquired about Nappa’s activities: “...reflection in the water?” He glanced down, as though only just realizing he was thigh-deep, before glancing back at the stranger and watching him take off his armor.
Okay, so he isn’t actually trying to fight. Weird reaction, then.
“No, I’m practicing. I’m also one of Roshi’s students, my name’s Nappa; I guess we just haven’t met yet. I’m uh...” He laughed to himself at how idiotic it was going to sound out loud, but continued, “I’m working on being able to grab fish out of the water. I kind of got stronger a bit faster than I planned on, and I need to relearn precision because I don’t know what to do with my arms in a fight anymore.”
A big one caught his eye and he held up a finger to request the fellow Turtle Hermit student be quiet, and focused. This fish looked at least six feet in length, and if he could catch it, that would be great progress; he could focus on being able to catch the smaller ones later, after he’d eaten. A brief pause ensued, where Nappa tracked the sea creature, before his hand shot into the water, coming back up with a firm grip on the monster of a swimmer.
He grinned to himself, pleased at being able to finally grab one, before turning back to face the newcomer. “Are you hungry? I’m having sushi for lunch,” he announced, waving around the still-struggling beast. Word Count: 342 Nappa Word Count: 663

| SAIYAN'S BRAWL Tarble Word Count: 358/758 |
As Tarble rose to his feet after placing his Saiyan armor on the ground, the towering Saiyan before him spoke with a resonant, deep voice.
" No, I’m practicing. I’m also one of Roshi’s students, my name’s Nappa; I guess we just haven’t met yet. I’m uh...”
Nappa paused, chuckling to himself, then continued, “I’m working on being able to grab fish out of the water. I kind of got stronger a bit faster than I planned on, and I need to relearn precision because I don’t know what to do with my arms in a fight anymore.”
Before Tarble could interject, Nappa raised a finger to halt him. Tarble watched in awe as Nappa scanned the water's surface, searching for something elusive. In the blink of an eye, Nappa snatched a fish from the water, a fish so enormous that it dwarfed Tarble's bicep. Water cascaded from the fish like soaked laundry being yanked from a washer.
Tarble couldn't help but think, "Perhaps I should start speed training like this." He regretted not bringing his scouter to this planet; he was curious about the extent of Nappa's hidden strength.
"Are you hungry? I'm having sushi for lunch," Nappa offered, surprising Tarble.
In the Saiyan culture, battles and power were typically the topics of conversation, not casual invitations to share a meal.
"Sure, I'd love to sit down and enjoy sushi with you. My name is Tarble, by the way. It's a pleasure to meet you, Nappa," Tarble replied, his excitement palpable.
It had been well over eight years since he had encountered another Saiyan. Being around his own kind was a welcome change from the human culture he had grown accustomed to. Tarble cherished the camaraderie, but he also yearned for the competitive spirit that came naturally among Saiyans. As they prepared to savor their meal, Tarble made up his mind: after eating, he would ask Nappa if he'd be interested in sparring. Tarble wanted to test his mettle in a challenging battle, and he knew that another Saiyan would be the ideal opponent. He wouldn't return home until he was strong enough to face his father.

“Sure, I’d love to sit down and enjoy sushi with you! My name is Tarble--.”
Nappa perked up. Tarble... that was a name he ought to know. Why did he feel such unease from hearing it? He thought of the elites and super elites, of his comrades in his training, of Luther, of King Vegeta, and of his son with the same name, the Prince. He could not recall someone named Tarble, but he still felt a deep, primitive desire to let this individual control the interaction. Nappa decided that he should follow his gut, because whatever had trained him to be subservient around the name ‘Tarble’ was likely some kind of survival instinct he’d learned too many years ago to recall today.
The Saiyan, now visibly uncomfortable, stepped out of the water and to a nearby table, where he plopped the fish. Quickly, he grabbed the knife that was laid down at the other end and - after giving Tarble another worried glance - began quickly chopping the fish into reasonable sections of usable meat. He moved as fast as he could, not wanting to leave the Saiyan waiting for too long.
Underneath the table was a wooden container full of the rice, and once he’d chopped the fish down into bite-sized sections, he swiftly grabbed the rice and began combining them into simple pieces of nigiri. “I’m sorry I don’t have anything more extravagant for you,” he began, eyes averted, “but I’d planned on eating alone, just to keep my strength up to continue my training.”
He took a step back and beckoned with his arm for Tarble to take a seat first. “Obviously, you can eat first. And...” he hesitated, because the question he wanted to ask would probably be met with a positive response, but he also didn’t want to overstep his bounds - not knowing why he should be worried about Tarble was really making communication difficult.
“After we eat, do you think you could do me the favor of having a fight with me? Just so that I could see how much more I need to train.” His body was practically vibrating at the thought of a fight with a fellow Saiyan, but he didn’t want to let his eagerness show before he’d received confirmation. | SAIYAN'S BRAWL Tarble Word Count: 460/1,218 |
Tarble observed as Nappa, the Saiyan warrior, emerged from the water and strolled towards a nearby table. A freshly caught fish landed with a thud on the table, and Nappa skillfully began to prepare it, effortlessly slicing it into bite-sized pieces with astonishing speed. Tarble watched in awe at the precision and swiftness of Nappa's knife skills. Though he had cooked fish himself many times, he had never witnessed someone handle a blade with such finesse.
While Tarble observed Nappa's culinary prowess, he couldn't help but wonder if he had ever heard of this Saiyan named Nappa before. Growing up, Tarble's guardian, who he referred to as his father, had regaled him with stories of legendary Saiyans like King Vegeta and his son Vegeta. Tarble had always been told that he was born with a lesser share of Saiyan power and would never come close to matching the might of those legendary figures.
As Nappa mixed the fish with a container of rice he had retrieved from the ground, he apologized, saying, "I'm sorry I don't have anything more extravagant to offer you, but I had planned on eating alone just to keep my strength up to continue my training."
Starving and grateful for any food, Tarble responded, "This is perfect. I've been on a mission all day and haven't eaten anything." He watched as Nappa gestured for him to take a seat, and Tarble eagerly complied, joining Nappa at the table.
Before sitting down, Nappa surprised Tarble with a request, saying, "After we eat, do you think you could do me the favor of having a fight with me? Just so that I could see how much I need to train?”
Tarble was taken aback. Another Saiyan was actually asking him to train together. Back on Planet Vegeta, Tarble had always been the subject of ridicule for being one of the weakest Saiyans ever born. Saiyans his age wanted nothing to do with him, and he had even heard rumors that the family he lived with was not his true blood. Though he had occasionally contemplated the truth of his origins, he had no connection with any other family and had grown to accept the one he had known.
As Tarble picked up the bowl Nappa had prepared for him and tasted the food, he felt a renewed surge of energy coursing through his body. He knew that he couldn't turn down Nappa's challenge. If he shied away from this opportunity, and word reached Vegeta, Tarble would become a permanent target of mockery.
With newfound determination and confidence, Tarble said, "I accept your challenge." It had been a long time since he had faced a formidable opponent, and he yearned to test his skills and strength against another Saiyan.

“I accept...”
Amazing. Nappa took a seat next to the half-pint Saiyan he had befriended and began to heartily dig in with a pair of chopsticks. He had picked up the skill surprisingly quickly despite only being on Earth for a handful of months, growing up mostly on Valhalla, Vegeta, and the various nameless planets he had been sent to on missions. Before coming here, most of his meals were eaten purely with his hands, and while a lot of Earth’s food was perfectly culturally acceptable as finger food, he liked the delicate nature of the chopsticks.
Well, if he was being honest with himself, he just liked that more of the food got in his mouth as opposed to his face and chin. But regardless, he found that the fish had a delightfully unique taste to it, making him actually a bit disappointed that he hadn’t saved the flesh for a more intricate meal than just rice. Not that he cared enough to stop eating it. No, in mere minutes, he had wiped his bowl clean, and was leaning back against the bench, enjoying the feeling of a full, satisfied belly.
“That was great,” Nappa announced, covering his mouth with a fist as a burp escaped his lips. He was deeply surprised by how polite Tarble had been thus far in their interaction - he knew that the times were changing, and that it was much more common for someone Tarble’s age to be a Reformist as opposed to a Traditionalist, but knowing about the shifting culture of the Saiyans and actually seeing the more modern people were two entirely different things.
He almost felt bad about sparring him, since he seemed to have more going on in his head than just fighting; that said, he couldn’t help the excitement he felt in his bones at the idea of actually getting in a tussle with someone who could hold their own in a fight. He had only met a few people on Earth truly capable of matching him in raw power, but Tarble likely would be another.
He got to his feet, taking a few steps away from the table so that they wouldn’t accidentally disturb it during their spar and started hopping from one foot to the next, trying to loosen his joints and be lighter on his toes. “I’m not going to rush you to fight me,” he called to his new friend, “So don’t feel any urge to finish eating until you’re ready; but when you are ready, I am!” Word Count: 431 Nappa Word Count: 1481

| SAIYAN'S BRAWL Tarble Word Count: 455/1,673 |
Tarble sitting down to a meal prepared by Nappa, devouring it as if it were his last on Earth. Nappa's culinary skills surpassed anything Master Roshi had mustered since Tarble arrived on his island. While Tarble rarely complained about free food, the joy of savoring a delicious meal was a rare treat. After finishing his bowl of fish and rice, the young Saiyan carefully placed the empty dish and utensils on the table. Leaning back, he gazed at the tranquil sky, attempting to find solace in the midst of recent events that had unfolded over the past few weeks.
A gentle breeze rustled the palm trees, creating an idyllic setting for a sparring session. Master Roshi remained indoors, engrossed in a workout video, conveniently out of their way. The sun had already dipped below the horizon, casting a serene glow across the sky and ocean. The two warriors sat in silence, a palpable anticipation hanging in the air, knowing what lay ahead.
"That was a great," Nappa remarked.
Tarble turned his head, a smile gracing his face. He found himself intrigued by Nappa's surprisingly upbeat demeanor. The tales he'd heard of Saiyan’s depicted of destruction and consumed of chaos. Yet, Nappa seemed to defy those stereotypes, his path diverging from the typical Saiyan agenda.
"I’m not going to rush you to fight me" Nappa continued, "So don’t feel any urge to finish eating until you’re ready; but when you are ready, I am!”
Nappa's declaration ignited a spark of excitement within Tarble. His mind raced, contemplating the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead. Could he truly compete against someone of Nappa's immense stature? The difference in size was staggering; Tarble stood at a modest five feet seven inches, while Nappa towered well over six feet. Physically, they belonged to entirely different weight classes.
However, Tarble's thoughts shifted toward his own confidence. He believed in his abilities and knew that victory was within reach. What better way to start a new day than with a hard-earned triumph?
"Is it time?" Tarble questioned himself.
The moment had arrived, and Tarble needed to prepare himself mentally and physically. Rising from his chair, he surveyed the area, searching for a suitable location for their impending clash. Fighting near Master Roshi's residence wouldn't be ideal, given the old master's generosity in allowing them to train on his island.
"This spot will do perfectly," Tarble declared as he made his way toward the shoreline. The heat from the sand warmed his feet, and beads of sweat trickled down his forehead. Gazing into the horizon, he knew there was no turning back now.
Tarble turned to Nappa and said with conviction, "This spot is far enough from Master Roshi's house."

As Tarble began walking away, Nappa allowed the smallest amount of his Ki to flow through his body, gently lifting him into the air. A moment later, he began floating behind the Saiyan, knees bent casually so his feet wouldn’t hit the grass. Nappa noted that his new ally appeared to be steering them as far from Roshi’s hut as was reasonable, which surprised him somewhat. Typically, unless he planned on involving Ki attacks into his fights, he kept them fairly close to the Kame House so that the Master could come outside and watch if he ever got interested in what was happening.
Not that he did very often... but the unspoken offer was always there.
Then again, perhaps Tarble did intend to use Ki in his attacks. Earthlings seemed to prefer martial arts to display their power and skill, but that wasn’t a trait he found shared in many of the smaller planets he’d seen so far, and he knew for a fact that some peoples he hadn’t met so far - like the Kanassans with their psychic powers, or the Keliouxians’ expert Ki Control - adamantly felt that physical prowess was a lesser form of combat.
He wouldn’t be surprised if Tarble was one of those people, especially since Saiyans liked being as aggressively powerful as they could be. With his small stature, his skill probably wouldn’t be big, heavy punches, but in channeling his energy for--.
“This spot will do perfectly.”
Nappa blinked, noting that they were nearly at the water. He didn’t say anything, though.
“...Master Roshi’s house.”
So I was right. Alright, we can fight alone, then.
He stretched his legs back so that his toes could touch the sand, and allowed himself to touch the ground once more. A few seconds of the water lapping at his feet, and the Saiyan noted that Tarble didn’t seem interested in making the first move. An intelligent fighter, then. He didn’t plan on having a staring contest with his new friend, though - he had done that with Uub out of a desire to beat him, but he didn’t feel that same intense competition with a stranger so much as he just felt a strong urge to fight.
Going ahead and assuming that this fight would be one of distance, Nappa flew straight into the air with his right hand extended. As he elevated, small compact balls of orange Ki shot from his palm, aimed at the ground around Tarble. After he sent about 6 of those blasts, he swooped down to approach the Saiyan, opening his mouth and releasing an intense wave of flames from his lips right at the center of the dust cloud he’d produced as a result of his earlier Ki blasts.
Already, he was having fun. Word Count: 476 Nappa Word Count: 1957

Observing Nappa's preparations, Tarble couldn't help but notice as the seasoned fighter began stretching his legs. It was a routine Tarble had never considered before a match, but he realized the value in warming up the body. Excitement surged through Tarble as he anticipated learning from such a skilled fighter. This training promised to elevate his abilities to new heights.
Without warning, Nappa shot straight into the sky with blistering speed. Tarble struggled to track Nappa's movements until he spotted the Saiyan warrior hovering above. Tarble swiftly adjusted his stance, preparing to defend against whatever Nappa had in store. What caught Tarble's attention were the compact balls of energy Nappa was charging. This technique was unfamiliar to Tarble, a clever approach to harnessing ki. Before Tarble could react, six ki balls hurtled toward him. Lacking defensive techniques, Tarble's best option was to shield himself.
He raised both hands, intercepting two of the ki balls with his forearms, which sent him skidding back several feet. The other four struck the ground around him, stirring up sand and creating a turbulent dust storm. Tarble's forearms throbbed with pain, the impact feeling like two baseballs colliding with him. He couldn't help but wonder if Nappa had been holding back until now. How much power did this Saiyan truly possess? As the dust began to settle, Tarble coughed and struggled to regain his footing. He summoned his resolve, preparing to counterattack, but before he could make a move, Nappa rocketed toward him. Their eyes locked in a tense moment, but Tarble's body froze as Nappa unleashed a powerful energy blast from his mouth.
"Move, body, move," Tarble's thoughts raced, but he was too slow to react.
The blast struck Tarble squarely in the chest, propelling him backward like a ragdoll. He soared through the air, skipping across the water's surface, eventually plunging into the depths about fifty feet from the shore. As Tarble spun in the water, desperately trying to regain his composure, he couldn't help but reflect on his father's words. Perhaps he was indeed a weak Saiyan warrior.
"Get ahold of yourself. Clear your mind and try to regain your bearings," Tarble thought as he struggled to regain his composure beneath the water's surface, determined to rise above his limitations.

To Nappa’s surprise, the fight was almost over before it began; as the smoke cleared, he noticed a form rocketing out into the water, bouncing against the waves like the largest rock-skip he’d ever seen, before the Saiyan’s body began to sink beneath the waves. Worried for his safety, Nappa flew across the water’s surface, noting as he approached that Tarble did seem to have some level of swimming ability; whether he was just too scared to swim properly or if he genuinely didn’t have a firm enough handle on the skill to save his life was unclear.
Either way, he needed help, and Nappa was quick to jump into action. He outstretched his arm upon getting within reach of Tarble, and exclaimed, “Grab hold of me, I’ll bring us back to shore!” He wasn’t sure if it was his stubborn Saiyan pride, or if he had been too anxious and water-logged to hear him, but Tarble sank beneath the waves without once sticking his arm out to be saved.
At that point, the Saiyan froze, unsure how to react. Did Tarble... not want to be saved? He hadn’t screamed for help, hadn’t accepted Nappa’s aid, and didn’t seem entirely concerned with his entire body underwater. However, after a second of contemplation, he decided that he had never heard of a Saiyan that could breathe underwater, so despite what his young friend’s issue was, he needed to be saved from drowning.
He jumped in, ready to pull Tarble from beneath the waves. Word Count: 264 Nappa Word Count: 2221
