Ember lay upside down on the soft bed within Nappa's barracks, her feet propped against the wall as she tried to figure out how to operate a cell phone she had purchased while on Earth. A notification that said 'storage full' popped up, and she pouted. She had only bought the phone a week ago, and only downloaded a *few* games... so why was it already full? She sighed in frustration and plopped the device down beside her, before looking over at the Saiyan. A moment later, she spoke to him.
"Hey, have you ever heard of the dragon balls?"

While Ember lay near him fiddling with her cellular phone, Nappa was on the floor, doing his daily set of pushups. It wasn't the most exciting thing, but he had to keep up with his physique, and the best way to get them in when she came around was to do quiet isometric exercises while she did other activities. He had barely even gotten started when he heard a massive huff from the bed, and it made him pause in his count.
Is something wrong?
The connection wasn't open between them at the moment, so he wasn't addressing her. Still, before he decided the question was worth asking, he could feel her golden eyes start to stare at the back of his head. The Saiyan looked up, and she spoke. "Dragon Balls? No, I don't think so. Are there dragons on Neraides?" Ember tended to wax poetic about her world more and more often lately, so his first guess was that it was going to lead to some story about her childhood on the Fae planet.

Ember shook her head and flipped over to where she was lying on her stomach, staring at the Saiyan. For a few moments, she just looked at him, taking in his features and thinking about ideas for dates they could go on after work that week. After another few moments of staring at him, she realized that he had indeed asked her a question.
"Oh, um... there's rumors that Night has them. I don't know if that realm even truly exists, though."
She had heard rumors of the realm - benevolent and in perpetual darkness, but she hadn't ever actually believed that it existed. Mostly because all Fae were supposed to live in equality within that particular High Lord's realm. It just didn't seem feasible to her, that High Fae, nobility, and lesser Fae could get along well.
"I was mostly asking about it because there's a lot of rumors on the um... sociable media that say they can grant any wish."

Nappa paused to think about what she'd said. The balls of a dragon could grant any wish on Earth? Did that mean that there were dragons on Earth as well? To be fair, there wasn't a lot to believe on the little messaging apps that humans used to exchange ideas. That said, this concept felt so wild that he actually considered it. He got up, rubbing the back of his neck as he walked over to the nightstand near the bed. "Here, I'll check in and see if the Empire has any information on it."
A moment later, he called his contact on the Lunar Base. That was his best way to get a reliable resource at a moment's notice. While he waited for someone to pick up, he turned back to face Ember. "If it's true, and you got the balls of some dragon to wish upon, what would you wish for do you think?" He waited a beat and said, "I think I'd wish for enough money that I don't have to work anymore."

She chewed her lip, considering his words. What would she wish for? There were too many possibilities for her to consider just one, so she began to list all of the ideas that came to her mind.
"There's so many things I'd like... I'd wish to find out who my birth parents were, and bring them back if they were nice... I'd probably ask for enough Zeni to keep us stable so we both don't have to work," she added with a laugh, "I'd probably wish to know if I had a Fated Mate..."
She opened the telepathic bond, feeling too embarrassed to speak her next words aloud.
And if it wasn't you, I'd wish it to be you.

...wish it to be you.
Nappa began fiddling with his thumbs, staring at the wall. He knew that the phrase 'Fated Mate' held a lot of pomp in her world. The Fae people were enamored by the concept of their one true soulmate being born for them and attached to them for life. It was an incredible scandal when anyone from her culture chose to end up with someone who wasn't their Fated Mate, in fact - even if that person had already died.
For her to make such a claim of him felt like the kind of overzealous compliment that she wouldn't mean the next day. Still, he couldn't help but feel a little warmth in his cheeks at the comment, even if he didn't fully believe it. "Nappa? What's going on? Why are you calling me?"
He quickly turned the Scouter on speaker so the Fae woman could hear the conversation. "Hey, I was just curious if you've ever heard of Dragon's Balls hanging around on this planet? Apparently they grant wishes?"
There was a long silence; the pause was so long, in fact, that Nappa gave Ember a confused look. Finally, the Watchman answered. Please don't make my day harder. There are a lot of powerful forces at work, and if you try to go hunting for those things, I won't be able to protect you.

When he didn't respond right away to her comment down the telepathic link, she immediately felt bad for putting him on the spot. Then again, there was the chance that he hadn't heard it... no, he had heard it loud and clear. She chose to ignore that, looking down at her fingers and picking at a hangnail on the edge of her pinky.
Thankfully, their saving grace came in the form of the Watchman. As soon as he finished speaking, Ember's stomach felt as if it had dropped into her feet. Were the Dragon Balls real? Was there really some way for them to find them? She stared at his communications device for a moment, before looking back up at Nappa with slight worry etched on her face. Finally, after he had ended the call, she spoke.
"Are they really that powerful? They can't be... right?"
Now, the prospect of finding her Fated Mate, her parents, and providing herself with the opportunity to be financially stable for the rest of her life didn't seem so outrageous. She looked down at her fingers for a moment, and then decided she would speak.
"Do you... want to find them with me?"

Nappa didn't react to her question immediately. Of course he wanted to go looking for the Dragon Balls. They sounded amazing. The danger presented in the call did give him some concern, but he was fairly confident in the power that he and Ember had as a united front. They had managed to get through every obstacle they had faced before this point, and he wasn't convinced that anybody who was protecting these balls would be so dominantly powerful in comparison to the pair that searching for them was utterly useless.
Still, he paused. If they looked for the balls together, who would get the magic wish? He knew that she would insist on the wish, seeing as it was her idea. He didn't even selfishly think that it was unfair of her to make that judgment call - not to mention, she had many more things in her mind to want to wish for. Important things, like the identity of her parents or her Fated Mate...
But therein lied the problem. Did he want to travel the globe searching for magic wish orbs simply for her to find the identity of someone who wasn't him, so that she could go off and be happy with someone else? It felt like a cruel joke for her to ask him to help her find her replacement partner. He didn't wait so long for the conversation to immediately get awkward; the Saiyan managed to squeak out an answer after a few seconds. "Yeah, maybe. I've got a lot going on right now, though, I don't know if I can go traveling the world today. It can be on our list, though." He hoped she couldn't hear anything in his tone to indicate how he felt.

Ember almost immediately recognized the change in his voice. It caused her to get off of the bed and walk to him, taking one of his large hands in hers. She didn't really know what to say to make him feel better, but something told her that he was worried about the idea of her finding her Fated Mate, and leaving. That something was his emotions flooding down the telepathic link, as clear as if he had shouted them to her. Her face grew solemn, and she spoke after a few moments of simply holding his hand and looking at him.
"I've been without my parents for my whole life. I've been without my Fated Mate for my whole life, too. I don't... those were just ideas, y'know? I don't think I'd want to wish for anything that would change what I have right now. It's too... precious. If you don't want to go and look for them, we don't have to. I just... don't want to end this conversation with you thinking that the moment I find whoever my Mate is, that I'll leave. It's going to be complicated and difficult, but... if you want me, I want you. Too many relationships and pairings end because of childish things, and I don't... want us to be one of them."
She could feel her hands trembling as she spoke, and her heart pounding in her chest, but closed her eyes, exhaling. She wanted to make sure that she was getting her point across without beating it into the ground.
"I... chose you, Nappa. I think I chose you from the day I met you, and I... things have been hard, but... I don't know. I think you have some doubts about us, because of what my culture tells me I'm supposed to do, what I'm supposed to have, but... I just want you to know those things for complete transparency. I don't want someone else to tell you when we go to Neraides that I'm supposed to marry my Fated Mate in their eyes. Or have someone ask you if you're my Mate, and you not know what it means."
She ran her fingers through her bangs with her hand that wasn't holding his, and sighed.
"Did that make any sense?"

He gave her a half-hearted smile. He knew what she was trying to do, and he really did appreciate Ember for it. Still, he couldn't hide the thoughts in the back of his mind. They were unkind to him and made sense. It was easy for her to dismiss the concept of a soulmate when she had never met one - but if she had one, what would meeting that person feel like? Could it feel like everything she had ever wanted fulfilled? Would it feel like a hole in her soul she'd never known was there had been healed? Perhaps she wouldn't make the wish with the dragon sack to find her Fated Mate, and that helped him.
However, that man - or woman - hovered over their relationship like the specter of the Grim Reaper, simply waiting to one day come and slice their relationship in half. It wasn't something worth talking about before it needed to be, so he chose to let it go and be happy... at least for today. "Well, we can look for the Dragon Balls then," he muttered, staring down at her interlocked fingers in his own. "I definitely think you should find out who your parents are. You deserve to know your origin story, even if it's not as great as it could be."

She couldn't tell exactly what he was thinking, but most of the emotions from his thoughts traveled down the bond anyway, making her feel deflated. She watched as he smiled encouragingly, obviously wanting to brush his problems under the rug, but she didn't want that. She wasn't going to tolerate it. He never showed his emotions or talked about how he was feeling - it made her worry for him. Why bottle it up?
"Nappa,"she began gently, trying not to let her annoyance take over. "You can't just let me say all of that and brush it under the rug. You need to tell me how you're feeling, what you're thinking - I... I want to know, so I can... So I can understand. Please?"

He sighed. Ember always insisted on digging deep into his emotions, attempting to play the role of a therapist. It wasn't that Saiyans didn't believe in therapy - well, some didn't but a growing number did - so much as the fact that he didn't want her to be his therapist. He tried not to lash out, though, and give her a little something to make her feel accomplished. "I don't know how all your relationship stuff works. I'm not even asking for a full breakdown of it - we've only known each other for a few months, and you don't owe me your whole life."
He squeezed her hand gently and continued: "I take this day by day, and I think that's the healthiest way to. Today, I'm fine. Today, I can help you find the orbs and help you wish for knowledge about your parents. Today, I don't want to talk about you and other men." He took a deep inhale, before abruptly attempting to change the subject. "Do you want to go swimming today? I heard it's going to be really hot out, and I found a fairly secluded, beautiful looking lake while headed out on a mission a couple weeks ago. I've been saving it just for you."
Quieter, he added, "I'm not shutting you out. But I don't want to talk about it today. Let me have that."

"That's fair... I just... like knowing what you're thinking."
Aside from their conversation, the idea of swimming sounded incredible - she hadn't gotten the chance to take a dip in a fresh lake for a while, and with the temperature outside, it would have served for a perfect date. She nodded, squeezing his hand and giving him a small smile. She could forget about this for now, and enjoy a day with him, enjoy splashing him with water and dancing around in her swimsuit in an attempt to tease him.
"Well, let me think... did I leave my swimsuit here? If not, I need to buy one..."
She released his hand, and walked to the small dresser against the wall, beginning to flip through the folded clothes in the top drawer - one that she had designated for herself when she had first visited his barracks on Valhalla. She hadn't meant to take over, but had placed a few overnight clothes in the drawer, and it eventually led to her keeping most of her clothing there. She rarely spent any time on her ship anymore - she much preferred the idea of being with the Saiyan, so she should have...
"Ha! Knew I had one... I think I packed it just in case."
Ember pulled out a small, green bikini with golden fastenings on the shoulders, and dangled it in front of Nappa, before turning back to the drawer and rummaging around for a few more moments. Then, she pulled out a fiery red one-piece that matched her hair, and held it up.
"Which one?"

As Ember bounded away towards the drawer, Nappa's eyes followed. She excitedly began to pull clothes from the drawer, glancing at one item and then quickly being drawn to another, more shiny object. It seemed he had made the right call, suggesting a swim. He could tell that Ember wasn't completely over their conversation, and that was fine. The fact she had accepted to push it until a later moment was enough for him. The idea of swimming had brightened the Fae woman immediately, and all he wanted to focus on in that moment were the positives.
After a while of her examining her options and finally grabbing two potential swimsuits, she spun to face him, allowing Nappa to be the arbiter of her outfit. He pretended to make it a massive deliberation, hemming and hawing and rubbing his chin indecisively. Finally, though, after he felt he had milked the situation for all it was worth, the Saiyan pointed to the green outfit. The red did match her hair, but that bright green, mixed with the blue of the water and the red from her hair - and that flash of yellow from the golden clasps - would make her look like the perfect mix of bright summer colors.
"Do you think I should even bother wearing anything?" He asked after a moment. He had his swim trunks with him to wear, but the area he had chosen for them to go to was private enough that he could also take the opportunity to splash around in the water while nude. If he chose what she was wearing, she would choose whether he wore anything. That felt fair.

Ember could feel her face heat up at Nappa's question - Do you think I should even bother wearing anything? - and she began to stutter, trying to come up with an answer. After a few moments of doing so, she swallowed, cleared her throat, and gave him a bold grin. She moved forward and placed her hand on his chest.
"Honestly, if you do that, I don't think I'll be able to control my thoughts."
She didn't mind, per se, if he decided to forgo clothing during swimming. In fact, she didn't really feel the need to wear anything, either. She only wore clothes so that people around her would feel more comfortable. The half-Fae had since gotten much more comfortable with her body type, and felt more inclined to embrace the societal norms that most Fae had.
"I can always go without clothing, too..." She murmured, her eyes lighting up with lust. "If not, I think I'll look just as good in this," she waved the suit around. "As I would nude."
She waited for his response, before gathering a few more things from around the room - two towels, sunscreen (SPF 40), ten bologna and cheese sandwiches (she had made them for his lunch the next day), tanning lotion for herself, and a cooler with some Capsule Corp Sodas. After gathering the items into her arms, the top of her head was barely visible from how much she was carrying.
"Are you ready to go?" She said, her words muffled from behind the towels.
