Joseph
"Ok," Joseph said. He wasn't particular interested in what was happening on Damaskia. He was less invested in that than Yan's death, it was never clear whether Joseph knew about Yan's death or how he died but if Joe did know, he didn't care. However, Yan being there made anything to come of that knowledge more complicated.
He wasn't sure how he'd make a move on Yan while was sitting on the planet that was his organization's main base. He already considered having to sneak around a certain ASI then a government with eyes everywhere was added on top of that. Whatever the case he'd catch him somewhere else or go to that forest area south of the mega city. Between his half measure to get ride of the Saiyan's on Earth with "duel" and not being able to prepare Damaskia to repel the Fallen, the boy considered Yan would slip but he knew better than to count on it and would be better off making a better plan. They'd just have to see what'd happen.

Yan
Joseph’s response was curt, an acceptance rather than an interest and Yan grinned.
“Why do you want to know?” he asked, wondering if the kid would dodge or actually say what was on his mind. If Yan realized Joseph was secretly planning to jump, he probably would have arranged a battlefield like he had for the Paladins, Star Wolves, and even the traitorous Shadowguard unit. Without knowing Joseph as a true enemy, expecting him to only interfere the next time Yan stepped out of line he didn’t think to plan as such. He just figured they’d both be satisfied when the time Yan stepped out of line inevitably came, always sooner than later.

"Going through the motions," Joseph said. That was along the lines of when Joseph curtly answered saying thats what people do when Yan asked why he wanted to know his name when Joe asked him.
He wasn't planning to jump him at the moment. He had to train and wanted to get much faster before making such a move. He was sure he was close to being ready for him though he defeated Recoome. If he could do the same to Chaos he'd be sure he could take Yan since him and Pendragon lost on their own Empire's capital.

Yan let out a snicker at Joseph’s response. “Have you ever met a mind reader?” he asked, wondering what new vague answer the boy would give. “I think I’d pay to have one used on you,” he explained. “You never speak your mind. I wonder sometimes if you’re afraid to.”
He didn’t actually wonder that, as he knew the child was just the epitome of anti-social, but Yan was never above trying to provoke someone into a more interesting response.

Joseph
"A few," Joseph said to answer Yan's question. He had met some while on Kanassa but he'd say his most notable example was Hayami. She probably never mentioned the half Saiyan to him and Joseph never had much interesting in speaking about people even when he knew them. "Don't pay upfront," Joseph said. The boy was sure that it'd take a psychic above Hayami to probe into his mind.
"I do. You just miss it." Joseph said.

“Is it really speaking your mind if you say it under your breath?” Yan asked, happy to continue on, though hoping the boy understood the metaphor and didn’t correct that he didn’t mumble them but actually needled it in where Yan didn’t notice it.
“Needing someone to be as intelligent as you to pick up hints and cues to your real thoughts and opinions isn’t expressing them with pride or confidence,” he said. “Which suggests you have neither.”

Joseph
"You're didn't use that right," Joseph said. "Have you considered they just need to be more intelligent than you?"

Yan
Yan smiled easily at Joseph’s attempt at a jibe. “My entire point is that an open opinion, one without fear of judgement or criticism, is made so even a layman can understand it,” he said, amused Joseph had either missed the point or was trying to become defensive.
“I am completely open to the label ‘dumb.’ It suits me well,” he offered, still smiling, “but communicating to dumb people is a skill I know you have. Perhaps you’re just too scared to speak openly to me.”

Joseph didn't think Yan was dumb persay. He consciously indulged in being injudicious and Joseph found it unlikely that someone untelligent would reach the rank of Commander in the Damaskian Empire or similar rank in any organization, though he had seen a Paladin Master who thought it was a good idea to throw a bunch of defenseless spirits in the way of a blasts, that master might have outdid Yan in foolishness by making civilian safety an issue on a barren planet, at least Yan never set out to put people he didn't want blown up in front of his blasts, at least not to Joseph's knowledge. "I talk to you like I do everyone else and you're the only one with this problem."
This sort of disonterest is probably what made Yan wonder if Joseph was more of a psychopath than himself but Joseph wouldn't say he was one and if you asked him if he thought Yan was one, the boy would say no because Yan though shifty was sincere in his moments compassion and had a sporadic conscience, whatever Yan actually was he wasn't as high functioning as a psychopath.

“That’s probably because they’re as disinterested in you as you are them~” Yan countered again. “After all, who else but me actually cares about the opinion of some troublesome kid?” There was a Scooby Do quote in there somewhere.
“What’s the harm Joseph? Tell me what you really think of me,” he goaded, keeping his easy smile that became more and more annoying the more persistent he was.

"They seem more interested in my life than I am," Joseph said. His friends and family often asked him how he was or what he was doing, things like that though he never cared much for answering questions about himself.
"I don't like repeating myself," he said in response to Yan asking what Joseph thought of him. He thought about asking if he knew where Aria is but he didn't want to get caught asking too many questions.

Yan
Yan smiled genuinely at Joseph’s words, as if glad he did have people that cared for him, even if he was as cold as a winter storm. Yan wondered what he was like when he was even younger. He was very analytical, which means as a child he should have been curious, trying to experiment and get the answers he so wished, but sometimes the mind was quicker, and just watching was enough to find those answers. He could imagine a toddler Joseph just staring at the other kids on the playground, watching and studying instead of joining in to play.
Even now, Joseph’s idea of fun wasn’t quite like a normal ten year old.
“Well, I’ll hope I’m an enemy,” Yan said. “For both our sakes~”
If Joseph treated his friends and family with more openness that was good. If he didn’t, and this was all the boy had to offer, than Yan would be better off as one of the super villains Joseph set out to face. At least then there would be fighting, and that had to be more interesting than this blah conversation in which he could just see gears turning behind the boy’s eyes just for nothing to come out his mouth.
“And may we meet next time properly as such~”
