The hair on his arms sizzled and snapped with an electric heat. Humidity clung to everything like a blanket and Gohan was no exception. Tepid air curled around the Saiyan boy as he sat in nearly motionless meditation. Lightning crackled around his frozen posture with only a silent chanting breaking the facade of stillness. If anyone were present who could read lips, they would know he recited a ceaseless stream of fundamental constants in the universe. The first hundred digits of pi, the speed of light, the golden ratio, the charge of an electron, and on and on. His concentration was focused totally inward, leaving the vacant white walls of the astral realm with no unique form to take but only those deeply recessed and fundamental memories of home.
What was once a blank white floor turned to a grassy yard with small pits of mud and dirt; walls turned to open air and shallow woods, and the ceiling and vast blue sky. A sweet scent wafted through the air like there had been a feast of honeyed meats, and the distant sounds of a river echoed through the peaceful landscape. For now, the prism would seem an ordinary summer's day. Who would show to meet Gohan, and how long would it stay that way?

Champion II
The Saiyan leaned against his recently painted walls, breathing slowly to calm himself down once more. He had just stormed off from screaming at one of the shopkeepers while on Cactaylisma; the shift between straight-backed toe-the-line businesses and the shady cut-anyone-a-deal types were so sudden as to be dizzying. They could literally be next door to one another, which meant that unless someone knew before walking in to an establishment who owned it, they had no way of knowing how that business was going to act. It had led to more than a few arguments when Nappa - assuming that he was in one of the seedier shops - had attempted to negotiate prices with the cashiers.
He needed a break.
A glint of blue caught his eye, and he turned to look at the Astral Gem laying on the nightstand in his ship's personal chambers.
He eyed it curiously, realizing that he had hardly used his for what felt like weeks or months. Perhaps taking a trip to a different dimension could clear his head. He grabbed hold of the stone, feeling its familiar warmth, and instantly felt himself transported across the cosmos. When finally the feeling of motion ended, Nappa found himself looking around at a clearing in the middle of a forest. It could have been one of a million spots on Planet Earth. The peaceful sounds in the background soothed him, and he could feel his muscles relax.
Still, who was he to meet? He didn't immediately find anyone. Curious, Nappa began to walk slowly around the clearing, peering between the trees to see if he was overlooking anyone. He didn't feel like shouting into the aether, so he opted to just quietly look until either the person he would meet arrived, or showed himself.

Gohan's muttering suddenly cut short and his eyes opened to the familiar world that had been rendered around him. Something tingled in his periphery, a small fraction of the energy around his body grating against another person's flow. The mental space that he had been using to meditate had been invaded, though the gentleness of his surroundings were yet undisturbed. The boy sighed as he stood up, bending his neck so sharply to one side that an audible crack echoed through the grassy field. He let his ki mingle with the air, carrying himself just enough that the grass licked his feet as he hovered.
Following the dissonance where his own energy met another's, Gohan kept his ki neatly circulating around himself. He had been sucker-punched more than enough times to know that sometimes, people who came to the astral realm were just battle junkies looking for their next burst of violence. It was best to have a little cushion prepared when coming face to face with a stranger, at least whenever possible. It didn't take him long before he came across a large man - so large, in fact, that Gohan almost thought it was a bear dressed in a person's clothes. It wouldn't have been the weirdest encounter he'd had in this place.
"Wow," Gohan said unceremoniously, coming face to face with the man. He looked the behemoth over, then glanced down at himself quickly before offering a thin smile. "We're kind of like opposites, huh. I'm Gohan."

At the sound of a sudden, unnervingly loud crack, Nappa's head spun. That was a sound that could only be made by someone else in the realm. He didn't immediately spot anyone, but within a few seconds, a humanoid face came into view. He looked... young. Perhaps still not even a man yet, but he carried himself with deep confidence, floating over the grass as though he were some sort of religious guru. For a moment, they both sized each other up. In particular, the youngling seemed very surprised - perhaps he'd expected someone in particular to meet him?
Finally, he spoke, and if anything Nappa was more confused by the comment than he'd been by the silence. "What do you mean by opposites?" He took a second before smiling back at the man in front of him. "You're a Saiyan, aren't you? Not too many humans with hair like that," he said jokingly, pointing a meaty finger up at Gohan's full head of hair. Suddenly, he could hear the soft hum of Gohan's controlled aura. It pulsed like a heartbeat, and despite the fact that virtually any living thing was capable of harnessing their Ki with the appropriate training, he took this as proof of his confirmation bias, deciding that he was sure he was looking at a Saiyan.

As soon as Gohan heard the larger man begin to speak, the cogs making up his memory began to grind together. Something about him was exceedingly familiar, but it wasn't until the man pointed an accusing finger and questioned the boy's lineage that he remembered fully. This man was likely a Saiyan too, and he looked remarkably similar to one from Gohan's own timeline. In fact, the behemoth had almost killed him, once-upon-a-time. But as much as he had the capacity to remember a timeline that wasn't this one, Gohan wondered how he had been recognized as Saiyan.
"I... never mind," he started answering the first question, but decided against it. He didn't want to be provocative. "I haven't met many other Saiyans here, so I'm surprised you can tell."
The boy lowered himself onto the grass, his feet sinking into the soft soil. Even at his full height, he was barely more than half the size of his opposite.
"Do the Saiyans in this universe love fighting as much as they do where I'm from?" Gohan asked, his words an open challenge. His stance was neutral, prepared to block or evade. It wasn't fair to this man for Gohan to project his childhood terror, but it was another step toward accepting where he was now. Either they would fight, or they wouldn't - but Gohan had no intention of staying helpless forever.

As Gohan lowered himself into the grass, it became much clearer about their height difference. Defensively, Nappa took a step back, so as to at least lessen how intensely the multiple feet could be felt when they were closer together. As he did, Gohan asked a question that startled Nappa. Where he's from? He wondered if he should go for that thread first but decided to save it for later. Everybody had their own complex stories, and the chances were that someone this young wouldn't want to immediately open up about all his personal details with a complete stranger.
"I... yeah," Nappa said after a bit. "I think it may be baked into the genetics of a Saiyan to love fighting, even if that isn't what they necessarily end up doing for their career. Like I'm a professional for instance," he said, pointing to himself. "I'm in the Saiyan Empire, and I take part in helping keep stability with the planets we have in our control, among other things. There are plenty of Saiyans who don't fight for a job, maybe because they're too weak... or old... or some - though this is very, very rare - are actual pacifists. There are still jobs that need to be done in the Empire that aren't fighting, but those don't always pay quite as well."
He eyed the young man up and down for a bit. "I'm Nappa, by the way," he added. "I'm guessing by the way you asked that... the Saiyans you're used to are fairly bloodthirsty? Because that can happen, too. It's pretty hard to avoid that kind of person with our culture, really. I don't have any real interest in that kind of stuff; I just like fighting because it gives me a rush of adrenaline and endorphins, and I like being stronger than the person I'm in front of."
"Gohan, right? You don't strike me as someone who particularly enjoys fighting that much."

Even if his name is the same, Gohan thought, regarding Nappa's thoughtful response, I don't think their personalities could be further apart. He hadn't realized it but since the start of their conversation, the boy's muscles had been unconsciously tightening. After hearing enough to form the earliest of impressions, though, Gohan's tension escaped him all at once, and he understood just how intoxicated he had become by the stress of an old grudge and some built-in fight-or-flight response.
"Gohan," he reaffirmed with a nod. "I see. There are only a few of us left, where I'm from. I never knew what Saiyans were like - I mean, there should always have to be trades and commerce. A whole civilization can't possibly be built off the military-industrial complex, can it? Eventually it would have to collapse. But by the time I was born, they were all gone. It was just my dad and a few others..."
Gohan paused, staring at the hulking figure for just a moment longer than was natural.
"They all loved violence, though. So now they're gone too."
When he first realized he was in the astral plane, Gohan had imagined a few things going down. First, he would begin an experiment of some sort, or otherwise make use of the time to train his mind. Second, most likely an overly-eager fighter would make their way into his newly established cozy space and try to beat the snot out of him. Third, they would probably succeed, and everyone would wake up a little more tired than they should have. This made twice in the past week that the formula had been broken. Rather than begrudge or question the fates, Gohan was going to make the most of it.
"You're right, Nappa. I don't like fighting, but I've always had to do it anyway. I'd rather read a book or do a science experiment. I'm glad to hear that that's okay for a Saiyan, though."
At the corner of Gohan's eye, there was just the faintest trickle of moisture. "There's a lot I don't know about this universe, but you seem like a good man. I'd like to learn more, at least about the... Empire? If you keep the peace, maybe you can help me. Everything I've seen so far seems like there's just so much war and fighting here, but if not everyone is like that then there must be more going on. And if some of you can get along, then maybe that's worth me learning so I can bring it back home."
A steady gaze looked up at the man, far too serious to be worn by just a 14 year old boy.
"Will you help me learn more about my people, and about this universe?"

Nappa's face scrunched for a moment at the idea of the Saiyan Empire being unsustainable. He didn't know exactly what a 'military industrial complex' was but it didn't sound positive. Nappa himself wasn't necessarily a genius of the economics of the Empire... but he expected that it was fine. He hadn't heard any rumblings about people not getting paid. The system had worked, so he assumed it would keep working.
At the mention of the young man wanting to perform a science experiment, Nappa smiled to himself, remembering the white labcoats on Valhalla and Vegeta working in the Research and Development of new technologies. Perhaps, if this kid chose to stay, he could work under them for a while. They were always trying to create new things, and a lot of them had effects and uses far outside the scope of simply warmongering.
Eventually, he looked up and asked the question he had been wanting to ask, his eyes wide with a vulnerability he hadn't been willing to share at the beginning of their meetup. Nappa knew he couldn't break the fragile trust that he had somehow built with Gohan, so he paused for a bit. How was he supposed to help this kid he'd never met before find anything that he needed? What even did he need? Where even was he from, and how long would he be... here?
Nappa assumed that Gohan didn't mean the Astral Realm, but the actual galaxy that he resided in. He decided to start small for now, and not make any commitments he couldn't guarantee. "Well, I don't even know where you are. What planet are you on, Gohan?" Nappa scratched his shoulder uncomfortably. "If I know where you are, I can let you know if I'm even in a position to help you with anything. As is, I've really only got however long this place gives us otherwise."
How long did the Astral Realm even give people if they chose not to fight? Could it be indefinite? Nappa hadn't ever really tested how long it would be until the strange dimension simply ejected people for wasting its time. Perhaps he was talking out of his behind, and he actually had as long as he needed to tell Gohan about the culture of the Saiyans and other races in the galaxy. "I'm from Planet Vegeta," he eventually said. It wasn't much, but he didn't really know where to begin.

Gohan nodded, paying close attention to the bigger man. Nappa seemed to take the request seriously - more seriously than Gohan expected, at least - and answered with an honesty that continued to impress upon the younger boy. Keeping things realistic and manageable was all he could promise in response to Gohan's awkward request, but that was far better than leading him on or making a halfhearted attempt and giving up early. The boy took a deep breath as he closed and reopened his eyes, trying to readjust the social landscape quickly.
"Thank you," he made sure to say first. "I heard there was a great library in a place called 'Kelioux', so that's where I am now. I wanted to learn about getting back to my own universe, or to see if they had any information here. Or maybe it isn't a different universe, but just... a timeline?" Gohan scratched his head at his own question, suddenly unsure after giving some more thought to the existence of similar-but-different individuals.
"Originally, though, I'm from Earth," he continued, gesturing to the landscape around him. "If Planet Vegeta is your homeworld, then I would love to hear more about that. Where I come from, that whole planet was destroyed a long time ago. Or, you said you keep the peace for the Empire, but I don't even know who's in the Empire. Which Empire?" Gohan fought the urge to unleash a torrent of questions. He had already asked for something overwhelming by accident, so he didn't want to continue that trend. He just had to take a deep breath, blink, and start slow with the specifics.
"I don't really know how long this place will last if we're just talking, either. Usually when I come here, I just get beat up and sent home..." Gohan tried not to look dejected, but the reality was undeniably pathetic. "How about this: I can show you some fighting moves from my home, and in return maybe you can tell me more about the Saiyan Empire?"

Nappa nodded thoughtfully at the boy's suggestion. He clearly had the makings of a Scholar with a thought process like that. The idea of trying to trick the Astral Realm by pretending to fight, or practicing fighting moves while in actuality they were just interacting seemed like a brilliant idea on the surface. Unless there was some all-knowing being watching them and determining how realistic their fighting appeared to be, it seemed like a solid plan to keep them in the Astral Realm as long as they needed to in order to get all their relevant information exchanged.
"That sounds like a great idea," he said encouragingly. "I'll try to answer your questions first, though." He took a breath in, trying to remmeber everything that the boy had asked him. The easiest one - that's what he would answer first. "Well, I work for the Saiyan Empire. It's run by King Vegeta, the King of all Saiyans, and it essentially is an almost entirely full-Saiyan operation. There are some children of Saiyans that are allowed to join - since we do a lot of traveling around the galaxy, some soldiers are bound to find love on the road, and those children are welcomed to join as long as they like to."
He hesitated, trying to think of where to go next. "I can't speak to why Planet Vegeta wasn't destroyed because as far as I know, we didn't avoid any near-destruction event. We just have been chugging along for as long as I remember. There's regular soldiers, there are people who help keep peace in our sattelite worlds, and there are people who work in elder care, medical care... there's research and development for new technologies... teachers and daycares-- it's difficult to describe. It's an economy, just where most of the citizens are kind of warriors or guardians for hire across the galaxy."
After that, he decided to tackle the bigger issue Gohan had brought up with his words. "I don't know much about timelines or universes, but we do have an Earth here as well, and it's an incredibly peaceful planet. It actually might be the most isolated from the rest of the galaxy... humans really just sort of do their own thing, and it's refreshing to watch. It makes sense if you grew up there."
"I'm not too sure when I'd be able to get over to Planet Kelioux, but I do know I need to stop there at some point in the next few months. Perhaps I'll run into you when I go to visit. In the meantime, why don't you go ahead and demonstrate some of those fighting moves on me? Maybe if we're lucky, I'll help you not get beat up your next time in here."

Gohan noted the key points as Nappa spoke, giving just enough of an overview that he had some good points for further investigation. All in all, though, it really sounded like the universe they were in was a scaled up version of the civilization on Gohan's own Earth. At some level it was nice to know that his home was a peaceful place here too, but just hearing that the same jobs were necessary made the young Saiyan feel a lot more comfortable in the unfamiliar setting. It would've been all too easy to take aspects of planetary civilization for granted when thinking about anything even more expansive, but it kept his feet on the ground to know those truths.
An easygoing smile popped up on the boy's face when Nappa mentioned he may be visiting Kelioux as well. He couldn't say that they were friends, but the implied offer to meet was enough to make Gohan more comfortable. "Thank you," he said, stepping back a little bit from the hulking Saiyan. "That may all be common knowledge to you, but reaffirming some basic things is really meaningful to me. And about Earth, well... that's good to hear too. Now for my end of the bargain."
The buffer of ki which Gohan wore still clung to his skin, moisture and static trapped within it. The young Saiyan visualized the energy racing along his body like lightning, ki circulating freely from his diaphragm as he breathed deeply. It was a physical manifestation of the tremendous power hidden within an adolescent body, a well of power that he had trained so extensively to tap into when necessary. Standing in the astral realm in a non-combative situation would not usually have counted as a "necessary" time, but for demonstration's sake, Gohan made an exception. As if plunging into water, the Saiyan teen momentarily gave up the fine control he had over his energy and let it splash around him freely.
Golden illumination wiped away the inky blackness of his hair and the blue of Earth's perfect sky was reflected in his eyes as Gohan returned to a power which was too familiar. "Where I come from, the remaining Saiyans had no idea this form was possible," he narrated, allowing waves of ki to flow uninhibited for long enough that even an unseasoned sensor would understand the relative strength between Gohan's base and transformed states. Seconds later he was back to recycling the energy his own body output, the thin barrier he wore before meeting Nappa returning with a new golden hue. "Soon, everyone could do that too, though. What my Father and I discovered was that if you can keep all of the energy bound together, it stays that way and you don't get tired."
To show off experimentally, Gohan threw a few jabs at the air. Each made a distinct and crisp sound, small afterimages of the golden aura tracing their path. He could have gone on to perform any martial arts forms that he had learned, or perhaps even a technique like the Masenko or Kamehameha, but Gohan figured that another Saiyan would be most interested in the "Super Saiyan" after all.

When he felt Gohan's energy skyrocket, Nappa had a decent idea of where the teen was headed. Sure enough, his hair began to glow a brilliant golden hue, and his eyes had shifted from black to a blue-green as clear as any river. No matter how many times he saw it, it was still astounding to watch the Super Saiyan transformation at work. The bald Saiyan merely quietly observed as the young Gohan began to practice jabbing the air, the shadowboxing leaving afterimages and aftershocks in the air around them. The raw power that the young Saiyan possessed was unreal - Nappa didn't have his Scouter on him to compare exact figures, but he felt roughly sure that the child was somehow more powerful than himself, and had simply been holding in his power before.
Who had he been meeting in the Astral Realm that he was getting trounced every time he stepped within?
Nappa wasn't arrogant enough to believe that he was the strongest person in the galaxy or anything - but he was strong enough to know that for Gohan to have been convinced he was weak from his trips into this dimension, he must have been met with incredibly powerful foes every single time he stepped inside. He wasn't sure how to explain to the young man that he had nothing to worry about, so he chose not to address the insecurities at first. Instead, Nappa took the conversation in a different direction. "What do you mean, the remaining Saiyans had no idea it was possible?" he asked. "Are you saying that the destruction of the Saiyans was due to the fact they couldn't access the Super Saiyan form? That it was only rediscovered after most of them had been wiped out?"
The thought was incredibly sobering.
It certainly explained why no such extinction event had come to his Planet Vegeta. The Super Saiyan form wasn't exactly common, but Nappa could think of dozens of Saiyans within the Empire who had gained access to it. He even himself had gained some form of it, though he definitely hadn't figured out how to avoid the stamina drain issue yet that even the young Gohan had appeared to have mastered. "Either way, you are incredibly strong, Gohan. I wouldn't be worried about getting beat up in this place every now and then. Some people are just absolute monsters in this galaxy... but you have plenty of strength within you - mentally, emotionally, and physically. You'll go far."
