Tao decided to spend a few days in West City. He was to meet an old colleague for a drink. It was rare to make friends in his profession. They would either reminisce about good times until the liquor dulled their senses and brought a warm glow to the night, or it would be a trap. The latter was unlikely. He couldn't imagine someone familiar with his reputation being careless enough to discard the element of surprise.
He got to the tavern early, flying there directly from his base in Central City. There were only a handful of people inside, drinking quietly with their heads down. He sat at the bar and ordered a sake. The bartender chatted with him about local news, it was pleasant and light. Tao dreaded the possibility that this wouldn't be a friendly reunion. Every time the door opened his stomach twisted. Then finally, she entered.
When he saw her face he realized some of the other patrons must be her men. Maybe even the barkeep. She looked very comfortable. Tall and thin, silky blue hair, dark brown skin, clothes that may have been fitted moments before being worn. Feeling awkward, Tao stood and bowed his head to her.
“Duchess, it's been quite some time.”
She returned his bow with a giggle. “Tao, indeed it has.”
He pulled out the seat next to his and she glided into it. Her demeanor confused him. They had only met on the battlefield before. This version of her gave the impression of a dainty socialite apart from the unwashed masses, a true Duchess. The Duchess in his memories was a feral creature by comparison. She ordered a martini then turned to face him.
“I'm a bit surprised,” she said. “You're a very cautious man. It was impossible to track you down, and nearly as difficult just to send you a letter. How on Earth do you find work?” She laughed. “Yet here you are, in the flesh.”
“Imagine my surprise! I can't remember the last time I saw a piece of paper with my name on it. I nearly burned it the instant I opened the envelope, out of pure instinct.”
They laughed together and had another round of drinks. Tao felt his earlier worries melting away. She was retired now, and founding her own agency. Her reputation was solid, her skills renowned, Tao thought she would do very well for herself. Duchess promised the world on a platter if he served as her right hand. It sounded too good to be true but he could tell by the glint in her eye that she believed every word. Tao first met her as a young man just finding his own ambition. Now he was well established, a master of the art of assassination. Yet he was unfulfilled. She had sensed it from afar. Maybe it was finally showing in his work. He learned over the course of their conversation, although it wasn't stated plainly, that she was trying to do him a favor. His former dream was to be the most successful hitman in existence, but the world was much bigger now. The galaxy was full of foreign threats and challenges, so numerous and exotic that it strained his imagination. Maybe he was no longer the driving force in the world of assassination. Could it be time for the elder to support the up and coming mercenary tycoon?
