Though she couldn't respond to the man's words, his stance seemed as unyielding as her own - no matter how corrupted the Vessel of Light believed it to be. But even while facing the beam down, the child of light pulled out one last stop - a final psychic attack to try and force the man to lose control of his own Ki - enough to power his attack down substantially. Still, it was hardly enough to turn the tide. And really, did it matter at all? What Yan hoped to accomplish... well, it wasn't going to happen in the way he envisioned. Omega would continue the girl's will unquestionably just as much as the Saiyans who were loyal to the Rasagin.
And to be honest? Maragai didn't fear her own death. Really, it was little more than inevitable. It was the fate of all Vessels. The young Rasagin knew what would happen after that. She would leave the realm of the living, severed from Je'sheln. Alexstrasza would be forced to find a new host for the goddess of light. In the end, life would carry on. The Conclave would (hopefully) eventually defeat Bor'yoku and the Saiyans residing on Earth would find freedom from the Empire.
But there was one thing that gave the girl terror. She was not in her own time. She was not in her own universe. When she died... would she be granted the mercy to see her parents in that Otherworld? Or would she be cursed to be a stranger to an unfamiliar world? When the beam took her, the child of light did not scream. Hell, she didn't even feel the pain. Too many thoughts flew through her mind in rapid succession. What would happen next? The Rasagins... Queen Az'shara would not be pleased to learn of Maragai's death on the human world. Even if she did not belong to this time, the Queen saw her as her granddaughter. Would she retaliate in response? Images flashed in the girl's mind of the Queen's armies bearing down on Earth-Sei. The Queen held no love for the Saiyans, after all. And somehow, Maragai suspected that the powerful Rasagin Queen would care little about the collateral damage caused to the humans when hunting down the perpetrator who had severed the young Vessel's life. In the end, Yan would have his wish - Earth would run red in blood.
But those thoughts were neither here nor there. And Maragai closed her eyes.
Darkness took her.
How long had passed? Seconds? Minutes? Hours? All Maragai knew is that when she opened her eyes, the golden clouds of the Otherworld were not what met her amethyst eyes. Instead, she was surrounded by inky blackness. She was submerged in water - the pressure of it pushed painfully against her skin. Her mouth open, only to let air bubbles to escape into the inky void. Panic gripped her chest as she struggled to move to no avail. Where was she? What was happening? Where were her damn clothes?
Are you quite done yet, child?
The alien voice invaded her mind, causing Maragai to stop and try to look around for its source. But aside from her head, the Vessel of Light found that she could not move her body. This voice did not belong to Je'sheln or Alexstrasza! So who-? Once she calmed down, the young Rasagin found that though she was submerged in choking water, she had no problems with breathing.
Or talking.
"W-who are you?" Maragai asked shakily as she turned her gaze first to her right, then to her left. But her amethyst eyes could not pierce the cloak of darkness around her. And even when she stretched out with her keen senses, the young teen soon realized that she could sense no energy in this world - not even her own.
I think the more important question is who are you? the voiced answered, giving a question to Maragai's own question. When the child of light did not respond, the female voice swept on. Weak of will, weak of body, weak of mind. Fools are nothing more than moles, too blind to see past their own noses. He will die as he lived, drowned in blood spilled by someone who feels just as justified to kill as he did you. And just as he drowns in blood, your pathetic idealism and pacifism shatters like the element you hold so dear. It failed you as did that wolf, but I will not.
"Y-you're talking about that man?" Maragai asked hesitantly, still completely oblivious about what exactly was going on.
Both of you, came the voice again, louder than before. Around her, Maragai could suddenly see the soft hue of crimson coming from her body as a seeping warmth crept through her naked body. You both lacked vision. And in the end, though you had the power you needed to defeat that man, you held on to your idealism until you gave up. And for what? To die? Like they did?
Maragai stiffened. This voice... Did she know about her parents? But how-?
"Who are you?" Maragai repeated her question, this time with more force. Silence met her words. For a fleeting instant, Maragai believed herself to be alone. That was until she felt a sharp tug on her body, rapidly pulling her out of the depths of the water until air met her face as she crashed out of the water's surface. For a moment, an endless expanse of a star-filled sky filled her vision. In the center, a large and shattered moon could be seen. But the size and color of it was enough for Maragai to realize that she was no longer on Earth or its moon. The Vessel was unable to witness that view for long, however. Soon, she was turned against her will until she could see her own reflection.
...
No... this was not her reflection. It looked like her. But instead of amethyst eyes, she stared into crimson eyes. And her once ebony hair was now a bright red color that shifted rapidly into different hues of the same color - both lighter and darker. It was as if her hair and eyes were alive with Ki.
Ki that she could not feel or sense.
She reached out, for the first time, realizing that now she could move her arms. As her fingertips brushed the water's surface, her reflection shattered, leaving behind the ancient symbol of Rasagin tongue - the same symbol that Caine had carved into the stone floor while she was in South Galaxy.
"Mother..." Maragai choked out, suddenly feeling sick as clue after clue fell into place like the missing pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. The alien's rants about crimson. His rants on a mother. Suddenly, it all made sense. "You... You're Elune?"
And so my name is a constant even through the strands of time, Elune responded, sounding satisfied with the child's response.
"T-that's not possible!" Maragai exclaimed, feeling her world sway around her. "You're a myth! A story that my mother would tell me so I would go to sleep!"
And yet here we are... came Elune's response - the deity sounded somewhat amused. After everything you've seen and lived through, I would have hardly painted you as a person labeling things as a hoax or a story, little one.
"But why?" Maragai whispered, still feeling ill as her reflection stared back at her, its lips unmoving as she spoke. "Why are you here? Where is here? Am I-"
Dead? Elune finished the young Rasagin's question, smirking softly. Hardly. As simple-minded as that fool is, the basis of his stance on death is true even if he is completely wrong on what his sources are. Death is nothing more than a separation from the living realm. And when those two realms are as closely tied together as they are, what is the difference?
"When Vessels die, they are forced to stay away from-" Maragai trailed off as Elune rolled her crimson eyes.
The Conclave of Elements and those fools of Kaioshins are nothing more than squabbling chickens, fighting over the scraps of what they believe to be right. And if either one of them were to step back and look at the larger scale of how both this universe and all of the cycles of these universes operate, they'd realize that they strive for the same damned thing. Maragai stiffened at Elune's anger towards both of the deities. I care little for whatever ridiculous agreements they came to - they are not of my concern. My only concern is to my children. To you.
"And what do you want from me?" Maragai asked, somewhat afraid of the answer. A long silence met her question as Elune stared back at her unblinking. Then, the smallest of smiles crept over her thin lips.
For now? Nothing. Continue on with what you wish. But know this. So long as I have a need for you, when I call, you will answer. Her words brought a chill to Maragai. Besides, you won't be remembering this conversation at all, my daughter. However, until our purpose is fulfilled, you will not leave this world. And you will be rebuilt...
Elune's crimson eyes flashed powerfully, causing Maragai to reel back from the brightness as darkness swamped her vision once more.
