Yan Cass: Combat Rune, Baba's Crystal Ball (2/4)

Jantellovene squinted her eyes. This entire techno-babble made Yan's description of what happened all the more surreal. Even though Anna seemed just like any other girl when she popped out of that portal in the kitchen, this was much more sinister than what the Keliouxian had imagined. It was directly out of a horror movie or something. She felt a shiver coming up her spine as Jianghue reached over to pat Yan on the shoulder.
"Hey mate, that's rough."

“They say the actual child coming out of such a mess is worth it,” he offered with a small shrug, “but honestly I’m still terrified of what the me in her is gonna do. So far she has been a total anomaly. I doubt the universe could get as lucky twice, if it has this time.”

"Is it really that bad though?" Jianghue asked, "Why, you believe in destiny or fate or whatever? What's got genes have to do with it?"

“Genes make up the brain. My mother’s side is a specific type of demon succubus. Pure evil, with zero impulse control, constant thirst for destruction, chaos, and sex...” he started to explain seemingly oblivious to the fact he was closely describing himself. “Limited empathy, obsessive tendencies...It’s all hardwired into the demon DNA. Any of it could be passed along.” It was the most he had spoken about his mother in a very long time, and never this light hearted, and this wasn’t even completely lighthearted.
“Then the Cass’ are cursed too. Never met one that wasn’t an asshole who died miserably. Matty was okay, but still an asshole—and died miserably.”

"Sure, that sounds like somethin' the old man would say--when he's givin' me a lecture," Jianghue crossed her arms. Sure, she didn't understand all that science-y stuff, but it sounded right. So what if it was right though?
"That stuff's yours now, mate. And you do what you want with it. That's what freedom's all about, eh?"
"Suck-you-bus?" Jantellovene had her hands on her hips, frowning. It seemed like she disapproved of how Yan described it all, but seemingly for a different reason.

“And I do not want to inflict that on an innocent child,” Yan said simply, not sure Jianghue got the point. “I’m stuck with it so I make do, but it hasn’t been rainbows and butterflies.”

"Eh, sure, that's fine," Jianghue gave a shrug, "It's all been a laugh anyways, unless you think you can actually get Jant's parents on your side!"
"Hmph!" Jantellovene huffed and stuck her nose up in the air.

“I could if I got serious,” Yan said with a simple confidence that was hard to question. Maybe he knew more about Jantellovene’s parents then he let on, or maybe it was just his confidence in the long con.
He looked back to Jantellovene though, solely at her as if he forgot Jianghue existed for a moment. “But I’d only get serious if you wanted me to,” he said with a seriousness that was also hard to joke away.
