The masked Damaskian lifted a hand to cover his mouth while he laughed, though the gesture was of course a bit redundant. He could not have been racist, as he hated everybody equally. Jokes were jokes, however, and so he let a hearty chortle escape in encouragement.
“That’s a shame,” he spoke with genuine disappointment. “I could use the help of somebody strong. Have you heard rumors of a glacial serpent, an infernal dragon, an abominable Kassack, or other such monsters lurking around the universe?” A horse was a horse, of course of course, but it seemed every now and then there would be a monstrous creature that rose to the rank of myth. Or, was it rather that the myth existed first, and a monstrous creature came along to confirm that myth?
All Qal knew was that such monsters could not be suffered to exist

Juturna’s expressions up until now had been soft and gentle but at the mention of creatures she lit up with excitement, her green eyes flecking with reds. She contained herself however, pulling it all back in, but the result was much like a child poorly pretending they weren’t excited
WHAT WILL YOU DO ONCE YOU FIND THEM?...
she questioned, peering up at him with a sharper gaze. She was really hoping he wouldn’t pop her bubble of excitement, but most people wanted to dispose of such beasts. It was its own type of prejudice!

The bubble of excitement was palpable, almost a tangible thing that even Qal could feel. He wasn’t sure why Juturna would get so excited at the mention of large, deadly creatures… until he looked around once more at the environment. In this realm, thoughts gave way to form, and it was clear this girl must have thought highly of weird life judging by the colors.
“I want to find out how they came to be,” was his simple explanation. It wasn’t a lie, and yet it wasn’t the truth. Ever since an incident on Damaskia where a cult had nearly summoned an entity of darkness, Al’Qatil had been tasked with slaying similar creatures. Creatures of legend whose origins were muddled in myth and rumor.
Some of these really were just animals that had grown large, or apex predators, but some were almost revered as divine. It was said that the essence of a dragon was infused into several relics, and when brought together, the dragon would be summoned and grant any adventurer their wish. This was just one such example.
“And what effects they have on their environment.” Was this dragon summoned in a way similar to the Astral Realm, where thought became reality? Did it consume energy from its environment, or the one making a wish? Were there consequences of this?
Probably not.
But, this was the mission that the Damaskian was tasked with. And after the war, there were certain treaties that came into being. The universe was a changed place, and it wasn’t like a member of the Shadowguard could enter any province he wanted, investigating and possibly slaying wildlife. Discretion was key, so that it would not be traced back to Damaskia.
“There were rumors of such a being on my planet,” he offered as an explanation. “It hurt some people and left. I want to make sure it can’t come back.” That wasn’t the truth, but it also wasn’t a lie.

Juturna had spent enough time in Yan’s eye to be a good judge of honesty. Between the facial tics and recorded gestures that all spelled a lie, tied with Yan’s insight for spotting one, she had a decent understanding of it all. It didn’t matter that he wasn’t actually lying. If anything, half truths often had more tells. They were made of carefully chosen words, usually too carefully, purposefully vague or to one small point.
If Qal really did want to research how creatures affected their environment she could help him. They could help each other. But her gaze stayed fixed on him and she didn’t speak, waiting for him to continue. Judging from an array of circumstances, she surmised that if she remained quiet he would keep talking and give her further insight to his actual intentions. Such analyses were proven correct, as his tune changed to wanting to stop creatures, to police them, to protect those who couldn’t take advantage of the natural order.
Beasts and monsters weren’t above men. A sentient creature always had dominance over a beast. All they needed to do was take advantage of their conscious thought. If they couldn’t do that they deserved to be smashed up, though there were many exceptions. Believing in such a dominance however made her more protective of the things she, Qal, and most mortals stood above.
DAMASKIA ONCE EXPERIMENTED ON KASSACKS...
THEY CREATED A SUPERIOR SPECIES MERGED WITH CHAOS SEED TECHNOLOGY...
she said, looking away from him now with a frown.
THEY LOST CONTROL OF IT AND KILLED IT...
If his employers were Damaskians then maybe he knew the story well. It escaped on Earth causing much structural damage and death before it managed to escape off world. There, it was crushed and destroyed. A truly unique being was snuffed out like it was nothing.
PATHETIC...
she said, looking back to him. Her bright eyes had changed to a dark brown, and her gaze now seemed much more piercing. It wasn’t quite an accusation. She wasn’t quite calling him pathetic, but if that was how he operated then he fell under the same umbrella.

Al’Qatil simply shrugged his shoulders. Juturna did not seem to be in a pleasant mood right now, yet that would not change his composure. “All too common a scene,” he mused. “It’s not the strong that create such beasts; it is the weak in wont of succor that brings such creatures into existence.” Juturna’s tale sounded familiar, but Damaskia had so many operations that it was difficult to know all of them. At the very least, it definitely sounded like something somebody would do.
A great idea, Qal thought, but poorly executed.
“Of course, a creature like that would need to be put down.” Juturna may have disagreed, and that was well. “But I do believe that bringing such a beast into existence to begin with was the sin,” he elaborated. “I’m not overly familiar with the project, but it sounds like they lacked failsafes. Or mayhaps killing the Kassack was the failsafe all along.”
It was hard to tell if Juturna thought the Kassack was pathetic for being put down, or if the ones controlling it were pathetic for having it put down. It could have even been a bit of both. Order from Chaos was an important creed, so that their nation would continue to evolve and be strengthened. But chaos itself was dangerous, and there was little to gain from unchecked creation like that.
“How do you know of that story?” he asked his new acquaintance. Surely it couldn’t have been kept under the radar, but her tone tasted bitter, as if she were there.

SOMEONE CLOSE TO ME WAS ON THE ASSIGNMENT TO KILL IT...
she answered simply, without much pause of hesitance, or even judgement. It wasn’t her being hypocritical. She didn’t think Yan was wrong for killing it on orders as she likely wouldn’t think Qal was either. There was a certain order to people’s lives that they liked to keep. The pathetic ones were those that gave the order, who could not figure out a way to do anything else.
THIS PLACE...
she said gesturing to the astral realm before them, the red and purple fauna lush while the ground was moist and almost black. It was a very alien world to be sure, and it was almost too quiet without something living in it.
IT IS A RECREATION OF THE NATURAL HABITAT OF THE ENGERLUS DRAGON...
she explained, though the actual species would probably mean nothing to him. It came from a backwater planet past Frieza.
IT IS NOT AS BIG AS A KASSACK, BUT IT IS FASTER...
IT’S BITE IS SO VENOMOUS ONLY A VERY SPECIFICALLY MEASURED ANTIDOTE CAN BE CREATED FROM THESE PLANTS...
ITS MOVEMENTS ARE POWERED AND STRENGTHENED THROUGH KI CONTROL...
IT IS MORE DANGEROUS THAN A KASSACK OR AN ICE SERPENT IF HANDLED INCORRECTLY...
she offered him, her gaze lingering over the world rather than him.
THEY TERRORIZE THEIR WORLD...
AND THE PTO PLANS TO NUKE THEM...
she said then finally looked back to him.
I AM THE FAIL SAFE AGAINST THEIR FAIL SAFES...
The super kassack too.
